QUOTE=pbr me;286606]Yesterday here in milwaukee ups called the union to ask permission to use helpers!!! This week was worse than peak!!! We ran about 20 helpers and could have used alot more!!! What a joke!!![/QUOTE]

Same thing happened here in our podunk 50 driver barn. We had 4 on one day and 6 on the other. The local said to file on each and every one and we will get paid. Its going to end up costing them $108 an hour for all the helper hours in January.
This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed/grieved, otherwise you will be using a helper year round with 200-300 stops a day. They tried to push this through in the most recent contract. Please do not let them do this in your center. It is bargaining unit work and they will see which centers they can get away with it at. From what I understand they are doing this nationwide. Stand up and file on each and every one.

wow, i didnt even realize that thats why they are doing helpers. I just posted a question, because they asked me if i wanted to be a helper this morning. Yea, most of our trucks are heavier now then they were in peak.. We were SLAM BLOWN OUT this morning on my belt..

I noticed a sign up sheet on the Bid Board for Preloaders this morning that want to work as Helpers, along with four rental vans parked outside. They started our Preload an hour early this morning, and it was pretty much down by 8AM, compared to 9:30 Friday. What a concept, start the Preload earlier and the drivers can actually start on time. We had heavy volume today too, I left the building at 8:25. I expect this spike in volume to be temporary, I hope we can get back to normal the next couple of days.

Same sign up sheet for preloaders as helpers here. They started preload early here but it didn't make much of a difference. We were slammed again today. I delivered 195 stops w/ 315 pieces and picked up 390 pieces at my 21 pickups. Had a preload helper for 5 hours 45 minutes. Worked 10 1/2 hours. I don't know if the volume will continue tomorrow as I think we caught up today but we'll see. My normal stop range is in the 120-135 range and it's only been in that range once since the end of peak. It's been higher every day since.
