when new people apply to the hub how does the management determine where to put people? is it just by how much staffing is in one place? like if the sort aisle needs two people theyll put whoever on that aisle

Depends on many different factors, one being skill level can you perform the task at a reasonable pace? Staffing is their enough people to run the area effectively? Or the fun one, do you piss off management and they dont want to see or hear from you?

In my day if you showed interest in working in a certain spot they would definitely not put you there. If you disliked something then you would likely end up doing that.

Your management team holds a New Hire Conclave once per month for the most desirable sort positions. It's very much like a Papal Conclave.

During the New Hire Conclave, everyone on your sort waits outside the building and watches for the color of The Holy 1000's diesel exhaust emanating from a predetermined bay door.

Dark smoke (fumata nera) indicates that management's ballot did not result in the election of a belt or small sorter, while white smoke (fumata bianca) announces that a new belt or small sorter has been chosen.

Most everyone else goes to load or unload. Which is determined first by sorter preference, and then by drawing straws if too many people want to be one or the other.
