I agree with this. I desperately wanted to be a helper year round before I was able to drive.

On a side note, the experience I gained as a helper was a huge help to me when i went driving. Already knew the Diad, had some area knowledge from the routes I helped on, etc.

Or they could be a driver instead. If they add helpers,someone might go FT driver in maybe 25 years.

Adding helpers year round would just eliminate FT jobs and replace them with lower rate jobs.

Not a great idea.

I don't get a helper, ever. I just pawn those home stops off.
I can't remember what the exact number is but you are 30% more likely to get in an accident with another person in the vehicle.

Crunch those numbers.

And then you'll wonder "where are all the new driver jobs"? You think route cutting is bad now, add jumpers and you'll eliminate half the routes in a center.

I agree. But when a vote comes. I bet 99% part timers. Will not VOTE

Two of my helpers became drivers.

So far. I'm the only driver in my building. Who started as a helper. 27 plus yrs later

I started as a helper; 3 winters while I was In college and then I started pt that next summer and was driving 6 months later

Do you think union members will ever vote for jumpers to be used year round. Good way for part time workers to pick up hours. Of course seniority would have to be honored. What are the drivers thoughts on this. I know in the last contract it was discussed but eventually they removed it from the contract.

Helpers with a low wage would be the companies wet dream. They can really drive a wedge between employees that way!
