You HAVE to take your lunch. If only 1/2 hour, you HAVE to take a lunch. And if you are a fulltimer driving now, you have seniority, you shouldn't have to worry about being thrown back into the pool. Saturday driving indicates to me that you are still PT and probably won't be driving all that much after Christmas.

The "one hour over" thing shouldn't bother you at all unless you are a new FT driver trying to make seniority as a driver. If you have attained seniority as a driver, then in one ear, out the other. Do your honest best. These are standards that UPS has set up that most drivers will tell you are unattainable. Unless you run and skip lunch. The On-car sounds like he is harassing you which might make me call this to my steward's and center management's attention. Don't take :censored2::censored2::censored2::censored2: from anyone! Ever! It will come back to haunt you.

Speaking of Union / Shop Stewards -

In my first 5 of 30 days, I was approached no less than 3 times per day, asking me what violations occurred, such as no lunch (there were more)

Now, going by the book, I should have opened my mouth. On the other hand, I wanted to make no waves when first starting.

If it were not for the benefits (6 kids, an ex and a current wife) I would never have taken the job, and would certainly not have stayed.

No, USNYer, I'm not whining.

I don't know how old you are, but I can only imagine how stressful your life is and will continue to be, unless you find some positive energy in your life. Perhaps you get some from your 6 kids, as they are usually fun to be around, hopefully you get along with your ex, and are keeping your current wife happy.

As far as UPS as an employer, well that's the business world today, and with the economy spiraling out of control, UPS has already announced layoffs in 2009.

You may want to start looking around now, just in case, based on your seniority. There may be another transportation company that would treat you better than UPS.

At the last union meeting , our union president informed all not to screw up because there were no jobs available anywhere else. Nobody is hiring.

I'm responsible for all that?

Yes!

You're obviously not a friend/T driver or you would say so. I drove a lot when I was part time, and the other more senior part timers couldn't because of conflicts with their other jobs. I felt like I was on top of the world, making all the money as their go to man. But nothing is guaranteed.

You can still fix this and have a good life here at UPS by taking the advice we've given you.

C'mon man, life is hard enough without having to report to a job that gets increasingly worse, because you are killing yourself for nothing. Dude, been there done that, have the surgical scars to prove it all.

Yes, along with global warming, apartheid, and the advent of our new socialist government 11/04/08.

BBAG, you need to relax. You are putting way too much pressure on yourself. First of all, and perhaps most importantly, TAKE YOUR LUNCH AND BREAKS. Why would you want to give them an hour or whatever it is you guys get for lunch and break? If you have to take them at the end of the day, so be it, but take them. Get back to the bldg before your cutoff time and go to the break room and sit. Yes, it sucks, but giving them 5 hours a week also sucks and you may find that they may reduce your dispatch accordingly. Second, why in the hell are you still delivering Saturday air if you are pulling a route every day? Are you delivering NDA and then some bulk stops or are you pulling an actual delivery route? Third, I agree, you do need to go see a lawyer as it appears that you are getting hosed on child support. In New York it is 17% for the first child and 8% for each child thereafter up to a max of 33%. I have no idea what child support is in Mass but I don't think it is such that you would net $40 after working 5 full days and then 1/2 day or so on Saturday.

I am not going to bust on you as I was always taught not to kick someone when he is down. I know that you are not whining. This has turned out to be something so far removed from what you expected and you are understandably upset. Don't go back to the local sort. Tough it out, take your lunch/breaks, let the screaming of your on-car go in one ear and out the other, and you will soon find that you will be just fine.

Keep us updated and I wish you nothing but the best. Dave.

Im not going to bust your arse, stop doing it is all I would say. You are giving away at least 50 minutes a day, and for that you will get 60 minutes more work. Been there done that. Dont do it anymore.
You need to refresh yourself throughout the day, no matter what is behind that door.
That is why the union, the company and the government has applied those rules to UPS. Show it in your board.

and all you pay is $40 a week?????? you ought to be dancing into work each day.

now, as for the rest, yes you are responsible for all that. just think, yoy could pay twice your child support by just taking your lunch every day. and still take home $40-50 more a week. So who's fault is it you dont? someone elses?

do the math.

as for your mindset. if you tell yourself you are misserable with your job, you will be. if you dont do anything but dwell on the negative, you will hate everything about what you do. only one that can change that is you.

BTW, as a negative person, you will radiate negativity to everyone else, including your kids. they dont need that from you either.

its tough. you gotta learn how to deal with it. otherwise you will burn out very quickly.

Interesting point by Stop Count. When everyone's thinking the same thing, no one's thinking! I'd like to know what other drivers in BBAGs building, center etc are not on as full-time drivers but out delivering. In reality that type of usage is infact preventing the same people from getting that bid they want, no? Never been through this myself, but is that a logical ans ironic conclusion?

But Benefits Are Great!

First - thank you. I am grateful for the advice & thoughts.

I get full time driver pay, been trained on and now drive the same route every day, so I assume I am full time, but guess I should really confirm that.

I assume if I bring up that I am still driving Saturdays that they will tell me to stop - so I don't say anything.

Regarding the Lunch & breaks - when out with oncar sup, we took no breaks, took no lunch. I made no waves because, well, I was new at driving, wanted the route. I see it was a mistake not to say anything.

How do/did others handle this? My oncar sups head would simply explode if I stopped for lunch, I believe. And I would go over 9.5 every day.

Man, I really screwed this puppy, didn't I?

Dude (and I hate using that word, but it fits here) after my ex takes her cut, I net $40/week. For 6 days work.

And to add salt to the wound, UPS charges me $8/week to take out the money & send it to her. So UPS charges me 20% of my take-home pay. Makes me want to sh** & cry at the same time.

Yes, but nothing that can't be fixed, refer to above advice from all.

Sorry for your pain, and it is some real pain. I'd definetly take upstates advice on this and get a lawyer or some legal help. You probably couldn't afford a lawyer for the support hearing, so look around for free legal assistance. I'm sure you'd qualify in your current condition.

You should really find out where you stand. If you are full time and loose the 3 or 4 hours Saturday air, so what. Here, if a full time driver drives on Saturday, that day is time and a half for 8 hours. Once you find out if you are ft or pt just tell your sup it's not fair that you work for free and you will be taking your lunch and breaks.

dude

you had the chillins, now you get to pay, until all of them get to be 18. it sucks. but that is the way it is. stop paying it, and you go to jail. nothing makes a bigger statement than you being led into a courtroom in handcuffs shackled to your waist, and tied to your leg irons. seen several treated that way.

otherwise all of the rest of us get to pay for your kids. and i dont see the fairness of that approach? we did not have the fun, so why should we have to pay for your kids.

my suggestion is not to get too kid happy with your new wife. you never know.

as for your plight, we have several drivers in our center that are in the same boat as you. one has all but one kid paid for, just three more years on the daughter. it is a long struggle.

you better learn how to deal with it, cause court, when it comes to child support, is not equal or fair to the fathers. in their court, you are guilty until you can prove you are not, and even then you are mostly still guilty.
