It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.
In our center, we have a "female" preloader who is maybe 5' 2" and 110 lbs and is by far our hardest worker. Yes, the word female is in quotes for a reason but not the one pertaining to this discussion. She busts her ass daily, has her cars wrapped up in time and helps the loader next to her wrap up his car, as well as keeping the end of the belt clean for the tug drivers. We have a former high school football star, 6' 3" and close to 250-260, who couldn't carry her pelvic protector (female jock). He has a hard time keeping up and always waits for the drivers to help him wrap up his cars.
This topic is the basic frustration many employees have with the Union mentality which exists within UPS and has been discussed in many, many threads here on BC. ("How many pkgs must I scan on average?") This also reminds me of when I was a cover driver working my butt off to get a FT job. A few of the older guys used to complain to me to slow down when I covered their routes. When I told them I was simply trying to get a FT job they said that I was making them look bad.
I never worked on the inside as I was hired off the street but would have done the job to the best of my ability at a pace that I felt safely comfortable with little or no concern that I was making someone else "look bad".
I will not apologize for the work ethic that my father instilled in me from a very early age nor will I "slow down" for fear of making anyone else "look bad". I do my job at a pace that is comfortable to me with the level of service that my customers expect.
