I used to do all the work on my Dakota and the routine maintenance on the Ram. I don't even know where the oil filter is on the Outback.

The oil filter in my Trailblazer is very hard to get to too. I usually don't change the filter when I change the oil. Not the best way but probably OK if you change the oil frequently.
 
One car (Chevette?) you had to pull the engine out to do minor maintenance.
It was a Tracer but wasn't the original engine. Had a hard time figuring out what parts to get. It was a sideways engine and the alternator and water pump where by the passenger wheel well. Absolutely no room from the top of the engine
