Seriously though....I'm working really hard on my little personal eco system in my yard...healthy soil is a must. We have a lot of clay so once I get the soil looking good in an area I try not to mess with it beyond putting the plants I want in the area
What kind of clay, you're in Texas correct. You do understand clay soils are not inherently bad?

I'm going to disappoint you.
I wasn't but since you offered:teethy:
Well then in that case...I removed a lot of brush along the fence lines. I had a number of crepe myrtle trees but they were wrapped in thorn brush. So we cleared all of those, that was a nightmare project lol but didn't stump them...I wanted to see if I could get them to bush since I like the pretty purple flowers but they didn't flower. I will give them this season and if they still only give me leaves in going to stump them and put something else.

How tall were they when you cut them back, and how short did yo go?

I liked your other answer better

I am in Texas. Its not the bright red clay but is reddish. And yes, my tomatoes and peppers thrive in it...contrary to people saying nothing grows well in it. My back yard is done in sections. The side of my house I have dwarfed fruit trees. My front yard I will be working towards a xeroscaping this year.

They were tall and twisty! We cut them down to about 2 ft stumps. I would have left them if it werent for the thorn vines that had taken everything over from the years of no one doing anything back there.

I can keep her attention on horticultural topics and such, you can carry on planting seeds. Should be no trouble, short to no turf to impede planting.
This is kind of what I'm going for in my front yard.

What is this prep to kill the grass all about? You understand most likely you worked against yourself scalping the grass.
Scalped it because if I don't I can't mow the saint Augustine when it turns green. It's too thick for me to push through. I'm going to be getting rid of the grass section by section. I do a lot of my own yard work...it takes me a while to get the completed aspect so I have to do things in chunks
