Jones,
We are talking about their relationship in the first decade of the nineteenth century during The Barbary Wars. i.e. - shores of Tripoli

I thought the Marines started out under the command of the Navy.

Can you shed any knowledge during that period?
They were always a separate branch, but anytime you are on board a ship you technically fall under the command of the ship's captain (this is true of anyone, not just Marines) and back then Marines spent even more time on board ships than they do now. It's probably correct to say that during that time they were more subordinate to the Navy because they were basically dependent on them for transportation.

Thanks for the info.
OK @UpstateNYUPSer, we'll call it a draw this time!
I'll be waiting!

That's why L. Ron Hubbard would have the secret meetings on his ship....he was the captain and the only law when aboard. Crazy nut job!

Common misconception, they work closely together but they're a separate service.

The Department of the Navy, led by the Secretary of the Navy, is the service-level department of the cabinet-level U.S. Department of Defense that oversees the Marine Corps and the Navy. The most senior Marine officer is the Commandant, responsible to the Secretary of the Navy for organizing, recruiting, training, and equipping the Marine Corps so that its forces are ready for deployment under the operational command of the Combatant Commanders.

Like I said, the Dept of the Navy is not the same thing as the Navy. Click on that link to the Dept of the Navy in your post and read the first thing it says under the title. The USMC and the Navy are separate service branches.

I never said they weren't separate branches. But the Marines are still within the Dept of the Navy, and the Marine Commandant is directly under the Secretary of the Navy.

You said the Marines were part of the Navy, that what I was responding to. Dept of the Navy is the civilian branch of government that oversees both the Navy and the USMC.

In First 2 Months in Office: Trump Reduced Debt by $100 Billion – Obama Increased Debt by $400 Billion

President Trump has cut the US Debt burden by over $100 billion and 0.5% in the first two months since his inauguration!

By comparison, under President Obama, the US Debt burden increased by more than $400 billion after his inauguration through March 19th 2009, his first two months in office.
I seem to remember when Obama took office we were in a deep recession.
