Thing is though, the people of the city elected officials through a democratic process. If those leaders decide the statue should be removed then that's what happens. It doesn't matter what you want. The nazis that turned out for this weren't even from there lol.

i dont like history being removed. These guys were americans before and after. Some had very good military careers. Some didnt support slavery but supported states rights. The civil war wasnt just about slavery

Look every piece of history is not memorialized with statues so this argument that removing statues erases history is idiotic.

Slavery was 100% the cause of the civil War, it is in the declarations of war of the states that joined the confederacy, and finally every person in the confederacy knew slavery was wrong and immoral because other people knew it was wong and immoral the enslaved knew it was wrong and immoral and those in the confederacy fought to keep that great evil around.

The idea that we have to know what is in the heart of every soldier of every military conflict before we can describe why the two sides are fighting is anti-history and something we don't do for any other war.

We take the reasons given by the LEADERS of the war to be the reason why the war was fought, and the reasoning for the civil war given by the leaders of the confederacy was because of slavery.

Please you don't have to pursue this line of thinking.

My city managed to rename parks and take down statues. We did it without riots in support of neo-nazi ideas. No one was murdered by some alt-right loser. There's plenty of civil war museums and battlefields to visit down here man, no one's scrubbing history. If people don't want the statue there then it should be taken down.

This statue was put up in the 1920's.
