They had a referendum on statehood, independence, or remaining as is. Did statehood pass? I don't remember. They've had a number of votes over the years and always chose to remain as they were.

I'll answer my own question. In 2017 they voted overwhelmingly to become a state at 97%. But turnout was only 23%, a historical low. That was the 4th referendum on it. The three previous they rejected statehood.
