R.I.P. Fred S

UnionStrong

Sorry, but I don’t care anymore.
Lunch over @230. Had an Econoline van.
5-8 stops left. No pick ups. 830-900 clock off. Had that route for almost 15 years.
I saw that in my first 7 years of cover. They never broke a sweat. I sht you not. I’m not begrudging them the job, I’m not saying others didn’t work harder, I am saying they should have unionized . But they were fat dumb and happy, and lied to. That’s why our pay went up contractually and theirs didn’t. Trust, but get it in writing.

I'm like UnionStrong. All I ever seen them deliver was letters and a few tubes.
In fact, I interviewed but didn't do it. I wanted the gravy instead of the money.
Our strike is what made FedGround. That's when I started seeing actual packages in express.
American Airlines...coffee maker batteries....hundreds a day coming and going....125 to 150 (winkwink) pounds each. Had a friend rip a muscle off the bone handling them. Big guy, 250+ pounds, all muscle.

Letters and tubes don't rip muscles off of bone.

Except we got put under the Railroad Labor Act. We had a chance in 2010 to be put under the National Labor Relations Act with Congress set to vote on the Express Employees Relief Act. Fred donated $32 million to mostly Democrats to get the Act tabled. Not only that but they required from then on all national union votes to only happen after 50%+1 of a class signed union cards. Used to be 35%. After that the Teamsters walked away from us. All of this was discussed extensively here in 2010. And every so often we have some UPS fellow come on here and tell us we're all dip:censored2:s for not voting for a union. Under the RLA there is no station by station vote. Has to be national which now is pretty much impossible.

Yep, I only say that because I spent about six months on the original campaign to organize FedEx. I watched many of these FedEx drivers say they thought Fred would take care of them and some of them were just afraid. Not that there wasn’t any support for Union, eventually they weeded those guys out but Fred and his crew wanted to make sure that they turned FedEx into a throwaway job. And here we are.

The Teamsters did not just walk away. The reality is Obama had promised a lot of people he would work hard to get rid of the railway act designation on FedEx and he did the opposite once Fred ponied up the cash..

At that point there was really nothing we could do. Believe it or not the Teamsters just didn’t have the money to fight something like that. And certainly organizing one terminal at a time was never going to work.
