The quality of life is still higher than pretty much all developing nations. Areas in those countries that are more prosperous are also more expensive. And are surrounded by much poorer areas. There is no hidden paradise anywhere where the poor live well on little. Just a hard fact of life.
no no in some eu countries they are lower cost economies and therefore more competitive bc housing isnt out of control, tuition isnt out of control, etc

Good question. I would think the average American would look at a Mexican working for $10 a day, no car, multiple generations in the same house, little upward mobility, monotonous diet, as poor. He may eat enough, but Mexicans who are more prosperous are eating fast foods and a lot of sugar. Rivaling Americans for percentage that are obese.
Mexican obesity probably related to nafta

Developing more likely to have affordable housing
The poor there aren't as well off as the poor in the U.S. They afford their homes by having multiple generations of same family all working and chipping in. Even then the homes for many aren't comparable in quality.

Do the same thing here.
Whether construction, landscapers, or restaurant workers, they all pile in one beat up vehicle and all live under the same roof.

A lot of them do that as a strategy. They minimize costs here so that they can send money home. Many doing that are Mexican not Central Americans. They often intend to return to Mexico and build a house and/or start a business with the money they saved working here. Central Americans are much more likely to stay due to how difficult it is getting here for them.

Mexicans are more likely to bring family here. Central Americans not as much.
