Rome was a massive empire spread across multiple cultures and what we would consider countries today. It was completely Balkanized with civil war, insurrections and invaders. It’s political system was collapsing due to the legions being directly controlled by the emperor, essentially his private army.
This led to the rise of Barracks Emperors, basically warlords who would rise through the ranks in military and overthrow the government, sort of like an ancient Qaddafi.
I'm not sure I was not there. it does seem like an excess and or a deficit of morality over the years has led to the collapse of many a society or empire over the years.
