Sheriff Joe

just rec'd this. I like Sheriff Joe.

I think he ought to be elected President!!!

You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb. Well.........

SHERIFF JOE IS AT IT AGAIN!
Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!
MaricopaCountywas spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.

Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff.

TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO

HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF

AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (In Arizona ) who created the ' Tent City Jail':
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but 'G' movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then He Started Chain Gangs For Women So He Wouldn't Get
Sued For Discrimination.

He took away cable TV Until he found out there was A Federal Court Order that Required Cable TV For Jails So He Hooked Up The Cable TV Again Only Let In The Disney Channel And The Weather Channel.

When asked why the weather channel He Replied, So They Will Know How Hot It's Gonna Be While They Are Working
ON My Chain Gangs.

He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has Zero Nutritional Value.

When the inmates complained, he told them, 'This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton.....If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back.'
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix (116 Degrees Just Set A New Record), the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barb ed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees Inside The Week Before.

Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As Sweat Collected On Their Chests And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.
'It Feels Like We Are In A Furnace,' Said James Zanzot, An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year. 'It's Inhumane.'
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: 'It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too, And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear,
But They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,So Shut Your Mouths!'

Way To Go, Sheriff!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

If you agree, pass this on. If not, just delete it.

have a good one!!

Yeah, it's an e-mail. BUT, if it says something I like then I post it. I've inadvertantly become a 'broker' when it comes to e-mail stuff.

I know I post a lot of stuff on BC, but there's plenty I am unable to post because I'm not good at getting pictures to post on here.......those, I send to several members (special ones) of BC. If you add what I post here to those that I send to members, I am bombarded with material daily.

Ask Cheryl, DS, Aspen or tooner......they'll verify it.

While I agree with not giving prisoners a better life on the inside than the outside, I disagree with some of his tactics and his 'I'm above the law' attitude.

The guy is really a jerk, hope he finally gets defeated. Most of Maricopa Cty is fed up with him.

Moreluck, thanks for posting an email that everyone in America must have seen a dozen times. Don't you have some racist anti Obama stuff you could share instead?

I had seen part of this before not all.
If it bothers you skip on over it.
I am not bothered, it is something I chose to read, and your comment about racist stuff was out of line.
Its not your web space being used, so just what raised your ire?

I agree with tooner as I am not bothered by Sheriff Arpaio approach to prisoner treatment. He isn't beating them, or torturing them. He is only creating an environment where any self respecting human being would not wish to return to.

I also find the racist remark out of line, not to mention disturbing. It seems that you cannot disagree with obama without being instantly labeled a racist.

I agree whole heartedly with this. It seems to me its always the racists that throw the race card out.

We used to have a Sheriff kind of like this guy in my county about twenty years ago. He didn't put up with garbage from anybody. I remember the drug dealers would not come into my county to do business because of the Sheriff's reputation. We need more of these guys, prisoners should not live in a country club atmosphere.

Sheriff Joe is great. If I lived in Maricopa County I would vote for him at every election. Yes, he likes to see his name in the news but I think what he has done for the prison system is long overdue.

Sheriff Joe is actually glad to see this go to court because the opposition will have to show their 'proof' in court....It's probably just Holder trying to take the attention off of himslf.

Via WaPo:
For years, the Justice Department has investigated Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona. In December, the department accused Arpaio of violating the civil rights of Hispanics for unlawfully stopping, detaining and arresting them. Then, for months, Justice officials tried to negotiate a settlement. In April, when negotiations fell through, the department threatened to sue. [...]

The Justice Department announced Thursday that it has sued Arpaio, his office and Maricopa County for civil rights violations, including what it says is the long-standing racial profiling of Latinos.

“At its core, this is an abuse of power case involving Sheriff Arpaio and a sheriff’s office that disregarded the Constitution, ignored sound police practices and did not hesitate to retaliate against perceived critics in a variety of unlawful ways,” said Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, at a press conference in Phoenix where the lawsuit was filed.

I wish Sheriff Joe was in his 40's with lots of time to fight against corruption. He could take on Holder with a vengeance!! Man,that would be something to see !!

Sheriff Joe rocks. Just to drive by his "Tent City" makes a person THINK.

Yep, demeaning people usually makes them behave.

I know a very conservative retired US Marshall that had dealings with him when he was with the DEA. He told me that he was impossible to 'work with' back then.

He should just go. He's an embarrassment to honest law enforcement officials. He costs Maricopa County over $55 million in legal fees alone (still rising), and only enforces laws that fit his agenda. Google Joe Arpaio sex abuse, for just one example.

I'm not a big fan of Sheriff Joe.

While I do not have a problem with spartan conditions for convicted inmates, I do have a problem with housing people in such conditions when their ONLY crime is being unable to post bail before their trial. Our legal system is founded upon the presumption of innocence, and until they are convicted in a court of law they should not have to endure such conditions just because it satisfies our collective desire for "revenge".

I would also like to see more of an emphasis on rehabilitation and drug treatment in our justice system. No matter how miserable you make the jail experience with tents, pink underwear etc, it will not necessarily be a deterrent towards future crimes when we are talking about people with substance abuse issues, poor impulse control, and the inability to comprehend the consequences of their actions.

I hope Sheriff Joe does the same treatment for all documents request from him by the DOJ, as the DOJ did to Congress when requesting info about Fast & Furious .

Just one big bad assumption......that everyone can be rehabilitated and they can't. Manson would be a good example.....Bundy too for the big names. But, the criminal element contains lots of non-fixable people!!

I tend to favor public humiliation--it is much cheaper and far more effective, especially for first time offenders.

Shoplift at Walmart? Stand in the public square wearing a sandwich board with the words "I Stole From Walmart" on both sides.

Humiliation is easily shrugged of with the next 1/5 or bag or ounce. That's part of the problem with trying to use law enforcement with 90% of the criminal element that is in for drug offenses.

I wonder where my life would have led had I had such a conviction. With that record, the sentence continues even after the jail time expires. With background checks and strict hiring policies--well crime and drugs might well have seemed the only real course regardless the desire to live better.

It breaks my heart when I go to my AA meetings and see young black guys with minor criminal records for petty drug offenses who are doing everything possible to try and stay clean and straighten things out for themselves...only to run headlong into the inability to get a job because of their background. The reality is that many of them are guilty of doing nothing more serious than I did when I was young and drunk and stupid...but in my case my drug of choice (alcohol) was legal and the cops that I came into contact with were white like me and so they cut me some slack that they would not have given to a person of color under similar circumstances. The so-called "war on drugs" is destroying far more people than the drugs themselves, it is blatantly racist and corrupt, and our prison and legal system will continue locking up an ever-increasing number of our young people...a disproportionate number of them black....until we as a society finally seek another way. One definition of insanity is to repeat the same action over and over while expecting the result to be different. Our system has been effectively insane for a long time now.
