The railroads are hiring all over the country. Crappy hours, but pay and benefits that are better than UPS.
Always in the back of my mind...If I retire now and pull about 35k a year from UPS, I could work for the RR and pull an additional 80k, and possibly double dip on a pension. But after goggling it, the average is more like 45k and lots of RR jobs pay under 40k. http://www.railroad.net/articles/topics/salaries-for-different-railroad-jobs.php

I guess I would have to move to the desolate State of ND and work for the oil companies for that kind of money.

You may want to check with your pension fund on their rules for working while receiving a pension.

It takes 5 years to reach full scale now. I know 2 people that just were hired on as brakemen, both were immediately put into conductors class. 1 said that one of his 1st road runs was with a 22 year old engineer. A topped out engineer can easily make over $120k on the extra board.
