On this day in 1975, Jaws, a film directed by Steven Spielberg that made countless viewers afraid to go into the water, opens in theaters. The story of a great white shark that terrorizes a New England resort town became an instant blockbuster and the highest-grossing film in movie history until it was bested by 1977's Star Wars. Jaws was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category and took home three Oscars, for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound. The film, a breakthrough for director Spielberg, then 27 years old, spawned three sequels

June 21, 1964

In Neshoba County in central Mississippi, three civil rights field workers disappear after investigating the burning of an African American church by the Ku Klux Klan. Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, both white New Yorkers, had traveled to heavily segregated Mississippi in 1964 to help organize civil rights efforts on behalf of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). The third man, James Chaney, was a local African American man who had joined CORE in 1963. The disappearance of the three young men garnered national attention and led to a massive FBI investigation that was code-named MIBURN, for "Mississippi Burning."

William Westmoreland, senior U.S. military commander in Vietnam, is given formal authority to commit American troops to battle when he decides they are necessary "to strengthen the relative position of the GVN [Government of Vietnam] forces." This authorization permitted Westmoreland to put his forces on the offensive. Heretofore, U.S. combat forces had been restricted to protecting U.S. airbases and other facilities.

I heard the phrase "domino theory" the other day when some politician was saying why we need to stay involved with the Iraq situation. I just shook my head an thought to myself---when will we learn? About the only difference between Vietnam and Iraq is that IF and when we finally pullout of the Mid-East totally those -hole countries won't turn around and become a major tourist attraction like Vietnam is today. They will always be at war between themselves as one group of radical tries to take over power from another group of idiots.

I wasn't politically correct in grade school nobody was..........lots of incidents of bigotry from family.......they had names for everyone...like Archie Bunker did.

My biggest embarrassment was my almost deaf dad trying to whisper something to me in a deli..........he always THOUGHT he was whispering, but was actually talking aloud. We laugh about it now......but at the time I was totally red-faced.
