Russia has already lost. The whole world is against Putin including many of Russia's citizens. Slaughtering Ukrainians would only make things worse for him. He put himself in a no win situation that he is solely responsible for.

I expect that this invasion has been on somebody’s table for some time. What event triggered it, everything is in the timing. Putin knew what he was getting with Biden, I doubt that he took him seriously, the American Public never has. Sometimes Joe makes tough man remarks when everybody knows he cannot back it up.
Putin might of saw a weakness with the policies of the Biden administration, all this “Go Green” nonsense and a weakened military. Who knows he might of gotten a bad report from his doctor and decided “What the Hell” let’s give it a shot.

I don't think Putin cares who is in charge of any country (except for maybe China). With his disdain of Western philosophies like those shared with the US, Canada, and the EU, I don't see him waiting for any particular leader to be involved or not involved.

Let’s be honest. Russian soldiers are sissies. The only reason they held off Germany in WWII was shear volume of bodies. Occupying a country is a lot harder to do than anyone realizes. Fighting to take someone else’s home is harder than them defending it.
I wouldn't say they're sissies but the rank and file are mostly conscripts who probably aren't overly excited about being sent to fight in Ukraine. As of right now it's pretty clear that things aren't going the way Putin thought they would.
