In 1971 Hayes composed music for the soundtrack Shaft. It become a worldwide hit single, and spent
two weeks at number one in the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1971.
Unlike most African-American musicians of the period, Hayes did not sport an Afro and instead
chose to shave his head bald.
Hayes fathered 12 children, and had 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. (Busy man)
In 2008 at age 65, he had a stroke and passed away.
