6 to 1 outside hire question

First, the rules about returning to your part time sup job if you fail to qualify are (like most things at UPS), different based on where in the country you are. There are many local contract agreements that have been established over the years regarding part time sups driving. Some parts of the country allow you to return to your sup job, others do not. Make sure as was mentioned before, that you check with H.R. for the rules in your building.

Secondly, the key thing that you have to understand is that, your division manager certainly understands the value of that, one "off the street hire". I hope you are the best part-time supervisor in your building because your Management team will want to reward that "best" part-time supervisor with a full time job. It makes sense - recognizing a person for excellent results is not only fair, it's good motivation for all the part-time supervisors because they see that a person's hard work is rewarded. Good Luck.

ROFLMAO, where I come from the more you do and better you are the less chance of ever doing anything else. its FAR easier to give it to a POS oms and hire another one than to replace someone that's dam good in operations or has years of area knowledge dispatching without losing numbers. let any center manager come reply I'm wrong I'll put in for a xfer to his building the next day LOL

If the OP didn't go to school and doesn't have plans to, he couldn't get an on-car position if he wanted it; a bachelor's has become a pre-requisite from what ive seen. OTOH, if they had eyes on promoting a PT (with or soon to be with a degree) to oncar, they'd put him out on the street regardless of whether a FT driver position has opened up. They'd be on the street two months at most, and then placed in their center. He may not even out long enough to "make seniority" as a driver!

In addition, from what I've heard the lowest level of supe that is transfered between buildings is a specialist (FT position), so a Pt supe doesn't have to worry about a spiteful DM transferring them upon learning about their driving aspirations.

I was a 1 in 6. You must be the best pt sup in your bldg, or you don't have a prayer. I came out of a major air hub. You need to be in the full time promotion pool and have the blessing of your full timer, manager and division manager. In order to be a 1 in 6 you must be a valid candidate for full-time supervision, as they will likely offer you the chance to go into package supervision. Keep in mind that there is no going back, as the pt sup position you leave will be filled immediately. Don't forget, your just a pt sup and havn't earned any real value for the company, regardless of your own fantasy beliefs. Also, you will still need to pass your probation as a driver. Failure is not an option, and don't be a jerk and think your center manager is going to throw you a bone. They will take total advantage of your situation and make you truly earn your new job, even more so than a non-management trainee. They will hate on you because you've decided to jump ship. They will put you through the fires. Then, if you pass muster, you will truly value being a driver and never dream of leaving this classification and all the brotherhood of our union. Never go back. Work your @ss off. Raise a family. Don't be a :censored2:.

Been there, done that. So glad I never went into full time supervision.

Are you part time Supes that went into full time driving treated any differently by other drivers then those that came up through the union ranks?

My building has a lot of former PT sups who are FT drivers. Some are now the most anti company pro union people we have. I think it has been well over 10 years since the last PT sup went into FT driving. Even our newest On Road Sups are not 90 day wonders. But they do get a lot of practice during peak. And covering summer vacations.
