Why do some Feeder drivers carry a hook?

It's referred to as a thumper, or tire knocker, or 5th wheel puller, or any variety of affectionate names.

The one end is used to thump the tire checking for low air pressure. The other end, with the hook, is used to pull the 5th wheel release handle.

Some drivers take it with them to their lockers, so it doesn't disappear. Others just leave it in the tractor.

I covered an overnight run last week and saw the PCM posted with examples of the seals not to cut. The PCM stated that these were loads that Coyote found that fit UPS's schedule.

edited to add

There were at least 6 different seals that were shown, all from different shippers and all were different colors. It also looked like they were all those flimsy plastic seals that break if you look at them cross ways.

yes on all counts. paid mileage but also hourly for all other work. also paid per diem or we could turn in all food receipts. it's a plush deal . never attained enough senority to win a layover bid. once a driver gets one , they never give them up.

Has anyone seen or used the new retractable dollies yet? Just curious how they are and any thoughts or problems you have with them.
