As for roads, the last 5 freeways built or improved, all done by private companies as toll roads.
You see, our government is broke, incompetent, impotent, and corrupt.
All they seem to be able to do is build new welfare offices in each town around me.

the real problem is government and capitalism are sources of centralized power where a very small minority make the decisions instead of all of us deciding.
i dunno quite often the government develops something and then corporations take it when its profitable and pay the government nothing for their research. flight, medicine, computers, the internet are all examples. anyways i cant remember a direct comparison between the 2. capitalism is unsustainable and therefore a monumental failure, and state socialism probably is too.
your government is not broke lol. you are the wealthiest country on the planet. your problem is a political one.
government providing things at cost or as a subsidy like utilities, roads, military, libraries etc is a way of freeing a society from exorbitant economic rents, so it can develop and be more productive. this has been abandoned in teh era of privatization, and we are returning to an era of neo feudalism where workers spend all their money paying the rent for these things, and are tied to the land.
if everything was tolled as you probably want, probably half the country couldnt afford the use tolls.

Constitution states we must provide for national defense so the federal government can continue that.
Jails should be a state/local matter
Roads should be a state/local/private matter
Healthcare should be a private matter.
