How new Jeeps were shipped during WW2

I remember years ago in the back of Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Popular Mechanics and a lot of other mens magazines there were always ads for US Army Surplus stuff like Jeeps and Motorcycles in the original shipping containers. They were advertised as dirt cheap. I always wondered if it was true. If so it would have been nice to order a couple of dozen of each.
