Jim Krumel: You work hard, but how long will your job be around? – Lima Ohio

Big Brown pulled down our street the other day. That’s what we call the UPS truck.

It’s a common sight. If it is not delivering a package to our house, then one is being unloaded to a neighbor.

You could say our neighborhood tries its best to keep the economy stimulated.

As Big Brown made its daily appearance last Monday, I couldn’t help but think if there’s one job this Labor Day that is safe from vanishing in the future, it belongs to delivery drivers. So many people are now comfortable buying so many things on the Internet that those driver’s must have a job for life. Then I went to work and a story that moved on the Associated Press wire changed my mind. It reported the Federal Aviation Administration granted Amazon approval to deliver packages by drones. It joins UPS and a company owned by search giant Google that are allowed to do so.

UPS testing of telematics tools draws ire of union dissident group – Freight Waves

Teamsters for a Democratic Union warns of driver harassment issues

UPS Inc. said it is testing advanced technology that it claims will enhance driver and public safety, to the chagrin of a Teamsters union dissident group that warns the company could be continuing a decades-long pattern of leveraging technology to harass its drivers.

The Atlanta-based company has installed the “Lytx Drivecam” in its familiar brown vans at four centers in Texas and Oklahoma. It is the first step in a plan to install the technology nationwide, according to the Teamsters For a Democratic Union (TDU), a group at constant war with mainstream Teamster leadership and deeply suspicious of UPS’ labor-related initiatives.

UPS, which is the largest Teamster employer with about 252,000 members, would not comment on whether a nationwide rollout is planned.

eBay Expands UPS Integration – PYMNTS

After publicly expressing frustration with the United States Postal Service (USPS), eBay has announced the expansion of its partnership with additional shipping options for the company’s buyers and sellers. The key addition is the use of UPS as a preferred shipping method – or as eBay calls it, an “integrated service.” UPS will be added to eBay Labels, available in both desktop and mobile.

The integration will add new features for selling and shipping, including 48 percent to 62 percent discounts that will be available automatically. It will also add 85,000 drop-off locations for eBay customers, including Michaels and CVS stores.
