Update: UPS flight dispatchers are asking to be paid like counterparts at Delta, American – Atlanta Business Chronicle

The threat of a walkout is on the table in contract negotiations for UPS airline workers who want to be paid like those employed by major carriers.

Flight dispatchers with United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS) gave unanimous consent last month for its elected union leaders to call a strike if needed in order to “secure a fair contract,” according to a statement Monday from Transport Workers Union Local 549.

The Union leadership said an 81-0 vote granted its top officers the right to initiate a walkout, potentially paralyzing the Atlanta-based logistics company.

UPS, meanwhile, views the vote as a routine and symbolic gesture that does not give the union a right to strike.

Companies sharpen focus on security after workplace shootings – WRAL

Joe sat in his United Parcel Service truck at the company distribution center on Potrero Hill on Thursday waiting for a pickup call. He was listening to the radio about the shootings at YouTube that had erupted just two days before and still had the Bay Area rattled. He shrugged.

Nine months ago, a fellow UPS driver easily walked through the center’s doors with a pair of pistols and a box of bullets, and after gunning down three workers and wounding two others, he shot himself to death. Since then, UPS has changed guard companies and tightened up its policies on metal detectors and bag checks, several workers said.

Joe, a middle-aged driver who used an alias because he said UPS forbids workers from speaking to the media, was skeptical.

Amazon and UPS have been quietly fighting over the post office’s cost structure — long before Trump – CNBC

  • Amazon and UPS have been arguing over the post office’s cost structure through public filings with the Postal Regulatory Commission, the federal arm in charge of setting prices for the Postal Service.
  • The central issue is the 5.5 percent minimum “institutional” cost contribution requirement from the post office’s package business, which competes with UPS and FedEx.
  • The issue could give a competitive advantage to either Amazon or its rival package shippers.

FedEx vs. UPS: Which Shipping Stock Is the Better Value Buy? – Zacks

Shares of both FedEx and United Parcel Service have fallen victim to the latest market-wide sell-off. However, this recent downturn isn’t likely to scare off many value investors, and it might actually make stocks like these two shipping and delivery powers look even more attractive.

FedEx and UPS have long dominated the industry that they helped revolutionize, which is now set to grow based on the expansion of e-commerce and increased demand for extremely fast shipping. The companies do face competition from Amazon and others, but the two legacy giants offer both stability and value, which look even more attractive amid this newly volatile market.

FedEx and UPS also seem to attract similar buy-and-hold investors. With that said, these same investors likely understand the value of a diverse portfolio. This means they might only want to pick one of these two shipping stocks.
