Interview – Planning Peak with Stephanie Dexter Director of Operations at UPS

What steps do you take to ensure you are ready for peak period when it comes to home delivery?

Peak represents both a sizable opportunity and a considerable challenge for retailers and logistics providers alike. During the 2016 peak season 69% of UK consumers bought online, according to a snap poll conducted by UPS, and UPS delivered 712 million packages globally, up from 612 million in 2015.

Moreover, globally UPS delivered a record 36 million packages on a single day – 22nd December – more than twice the normal average. This substantial uplift in deliveries can place a strain on even the most resilient logistics set-up. UPS has taken a number of steps to ensure we are ready to meet the rising demand each season and help retailers exceed their customers’ expectations.

One of Atlanta-based United Parcel Service Inc.’s (NYSE: UPS) big retail customers – Amazon.com Inc. – will lease its own fleet of 767 cargo jets to move merchandise.

There has been a lot of talk that Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) might set up its own delivery service that would compete with UPS and FedEx.

Amazon says the new lease deal will compliment the company’s existing delivery network and ensure air cargo capacity to support one and two-day delivery for customers. Company officials also say the move is meant to reduce shipping costs.

Teamsters hint at strike, which UPS calls impossible – Atlanta Business Chronicle

After four years of contract negotiations, the tension between Teamsters Local 2727 and the United Parcel Service Inc. remain high. But a spokesperson UPS said, no matter what the union says, a strike is not imminent.

The teamsters group, which is based in Louisville and represent a workforce of approximately 1,300 employees, filed their second request Friday with the National Mediation Board (NMB) asking to be released from mediated contract negotiations with the Atlanta-based package delivery company. The teamsters want a new contract for their aircraft mechanics and related classifications but allege that “UPS has refused to bargain fairly or offer reasonable proposals to come to a fair agreement, causing growing unrest and instability within the maintenance workforce as the busy holiday shipping season nears.”

The mediation board declined the union’s request on Friday afternoon, according to UPS, meaning the two sides will continue to negotiate.
