dont mistake an excuse for an example of something which is by luck not by any decisions your siblings made.
Luck? I’ll have to tell my siblings they made it by way of luck. They’ll all get a good laugh out of that. Especially my oldest sister, who as a single mother, made it through medical school by sleeping 3-4 hours a night, while also working a full time job.

That’s a lot of poor people today. It’s a cycle that is extremely difficult to break without outside assistance.
I don’t have a problem providing assistance. I’m all for helping those who help themselves. I’ve done it many times. What I’m totally against is giving money and benefits to lazy people who expect it and don’t try to do better.

you dont believe in luck?

your oldest sister wasnt born intelligent by luck, it was purely through hard work she became so smart?

I think the data suggests there are far fewer lazy people not trying than the media would have you believe.

Ok. You got me there. Yes, it may have been luck that she was born intelligent. But it was through hard work that she became EDUCATED and succeeded.

i agree she has to work to become educated, but she also has to live in a country where thats a possibility for her given her circumstances. some smart people around the world arent so fortunate because of their bad luck being born in the country they are in, they are too poor to even try and get educated.

That has nothing to do with this conversation.

Hell yeah, fight it. Only the strong survive. Look at the veterans coming back from war with hellacious injuries and missing limbs. Many of them fight every day and refuse to give up. Who am I to give up?
There are many vets that have injuries that you cannot see. Many fight to heal those injuries. And many that lose fight. The same can be said for millions of people that have mental illnesses.

were talking about determinism like luck vs choice. im saying its a mix of both and your smart sibling had the luck of being born in america where its a possibility of going to school while poor vs being born in a nairobi slum and being smart where they is a much lower opportunity to go to school.

The conversation was about single mothers. Remember?

You can’t choose the circumstances into which you’re born. That said, I think wealthy parents have a duty to their children to teach them how to be responsible adults and to hopefully help others.
intergenerational wealth is a huge form of welfare not to mention luck on the part of those receiving it.

And instead of spending the money to help those vets billions are being spent on people who have no right to be here because the current administration thinks there will be a political payoff down the road.

And somehow that's the fault of those born in America? When I was in the former Soviet Union republics I got a couple of haircuts for just over the equivalent of $1 each. People were stunned when they heard how much.I paid back in the States and women paid much more. There are relatively few places on Earth where if you want anything you've got to work hard for it like we do in the States. Most people in many countries don't work that hard because there's no payoff for doing so. So life revolves around socializing, not work. So pick your poison.

theres other western countires with better economic mobility than america.

america has a worse work life balance than other countries too.

working hard does not guarantee success in america.

many things factor into a workers wage, part of it is cost of living, part of it is how strong hte labour movement is, part of it is govt regulation, partly market conditions, etc.

yea it is. we are products of our environment to some degree. there was a combination of things in your life regardless of what you did that led you to where you are.

some things in our life are within our control, some things are beyond our control.
I agree with you up to a certain point. It’s why I believe in criminal justice reform that doesn’t involve letting people who stab their mothers to death or murdering 18 year old girls get out with 15 year sentences. I think there should be second chances for most people, but when your second chance puts others at risk it’s not worth it.

I think not hindering these people’s ability to put their past behind them and find honest work is important.
