Taxis don't work around here like in the big cities. You can call for a cab, but there's no hailing a cab. It's like a bus system.....it doesn't work here either. Vegas works for cabs and busses.....but not here. LA maybe .

I don't know if a lot of people realize the chance they're taking, driving for Lyft or Uber. I can guarantee 90% of the people driving for these companies don't have the proper auto insurance.

I'm waiting for the day (not hoping) one of these drivers gets into a bad accident and a fare gets seriously hurt or killed. I think that will open some eyes as to how bad a deal this is for those involved.

Our newest thing locally are medical taxis. They are supposed to be used for medical transports only but I have seen them carrying non-medical fares.
Stings have been set up at airports and other high demand locations. The plain clothes cop hails an Uber without going through the app, he tells the driver to take him to location X for X amount of dollars. If the driver takes the bait, the cop gets in the car, makes the cash transaction and tells the driver to turn off the car, your being arrested and the car is being impounded. Driver is S.O.L.

You probably have missed the boat depending on what area you are in.....

I am better off signing up for some Saturday FDX overtime at $45/hour. I will spend their fuel, maintenance and wear and tear on their tractor and will probably sleep 1/3 of the shift anyways.
You're right, depending on what area is very true. To say I live in a county with a mass amount of hipsters is like saying Beijing has a lot of Chinese people. Hipsters use Uber for everything. The airport is international and no circle jerking. Passengers dropping off rent cars or leaving hotels are calling UBER constantly. Most guys would prefer to work Saturday for Purple but managers at this station aren't giving out Saturday OT to FT employees.

Uber is basically the FedEx Ground of taxis

Taxis are the FDX Ground of taxis. Uber is a step above it, cleaned up and a bit more polished.

Retired radio talker Bruce Williams devoted a chapter (or most of one) in his autobiography to his experience driving a cab when he finished college. Hard to believe that the casino business have evolved more in the last 50 years than the cab business.

Those have been common down here for years. Most of their fares are paid by Medicare, Medicaid, or other government medical programs.

And I didn't say there was but people have left themselves open to financial ruin in pursuit of a quick buck.

A recent analysis showed that Uber and Lyft drivers only average around $10 per hour if you consider their overhead costs. This equals big bucks for the company and relatively little for drivers.

I'm aware of a few people moonlighting for Uber, and they echo these results. If you average out the few high fares you get on a Saturday night toting around drunks and partiers vs. sitting around waiting for any fares at all (most of the time), it isn't a very good job.

Your car, your insurance etc. Sound familiar?

Where we live, the law requires all drivers of motor vehicles to carry insurance. Uber drivers are insured by Uber from the time a fare is picked up until the fare is dropped off. In my areas, weekend drivers are making on average 27-34 dollars per hour. Drivers who drive after clocking out from purple, sometimes get lucky and make 50 or 60 dollars before going home for the night. If an Uber driver is in a area where he's just sitting in the car then its not worth his time. Here, soon as a fare is dropped off, the Uber screen is blowing up with directions to the next fare before the driver can even give the passenger a rating. Sat/Sun driving total of 7 hours: 227.00 minus 30 dollars for fuel. With children to write off, taxes no big deal.

Uber does not insure their drivers, who are contractors, not employees.

Be advised that they'll 1099 you (after they take their 20% to 30% off the top), meaning that you'll be responsible for applicable income taxes as well as both the employer and employee contributions for Social Security and Medicare. There are also liability issues to consider. If you tell your insurer that you're going to use your car for this, they'll jack up your rates. If you don't tell them, but have an accident while on duty, they probably won't pay it. Some people have gone through the trouble of creating an LLC and working it through that.

It might be worth the hassle if you live in an area with enough of a demand. You'll hear a lot about the handful of drivers who are making good money and nothing about the other 90% who aren't.
ALL very good points that MANY don't think about!!!
