It's a phone you aren't slave to. I can actually leave my house without it and enjoy the peace & qiuet.

Nope, I still haven't rooted my phone. When I first got the phone it was the top thing on my to do list but my lazy side took over and I still haven't even gotten around to buying an sd card for it... I did bookmark the how to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 , does that still count?

I do, but I suspect that is not what they mean....!

I have found with the iPhone that if you shut off the sound and the flash you can take stealth pics of.................nature and stuff like that.

Paul,rooting it is like taking it off the assembly line and programming it before your provider
gets a hold of it and sets limits on it.Just like a computer,you can act as administrator,
and decide what you want and don't want.Turn it into a phase shifter,possibly even a transporter.
The time machine app would enable you to go back in time to visit old friends.

If I were to do this, could I delete the "mandatory" apps that come with the phone? I get updates every day for crap I'll never use.

And the phase shifter sounds like IT would be useful!
