Did You Know Tipping is Racist As Hell?

Tipping is Racist
In the late 1800s, tipping was actually frowned upon by many Americans who believed that employers were responsible for paying their workers, not the customers. But that shifted when restaurant owners and railroad companies objected arguing
that tipping was a fair alternative to paying their workers a regular wage.
Why? Because these workers were Black.
White employers resented the freedom of their formerly enslaved Black employees. In wanting to keep Black people poor, and thus “inferior” in their eyes, they employed the tipping system. A writer of the day even said, “I could never feel comfortable tipping a white person. Tipping is reserved for Negroes.”
The corrupt tipping system allowed white employers to get free labor, keep Black people impoverished, and maintain the myth of white supremacy and it’s a sneaky practice that continues today, disproportionately keeping Black folks in impoverished conditions.

A Brief History of Tipping
As tipping became widespread in America, many found it to be antithetical to democracy and American ideals of equality. In 1891, journalist Arthur Gaye wrote that a tip should be given to someone "who is presumed to be inferior to the donor, not only in worldly wealth but in social position also." "Tipping and the aristocratic idea it exemplifies is what we left Europe to escape,” William Scott wrote in his 1916 anti-tipping brochure, “The Itching Palm,” in which he argued that tipping was as "un-American" as "slavery."

In 1904, the Anti-Tipping Society of America sprang up in Georgia, and its 100,000 members signed pledges not to tip anyone for a year. In 1909, Washington became the first of six states to pass an anti-tipping law. But, the new laws rarely were enforced, and, by 1926, every anti-tipping law had been repealed.

In America, tipping changed in the 1960s, when Congress agreed that workers could receive a lower minimum wage if a portion of their salary came from tips. The minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13, which has not changed over the years, as long as those workers receive at least $30 per month in tips.
The restaurant industry employs 10 million people in the US; restaurant workers use food stamps at twice the rate of the rest of the workforce and are 3 times as likely to live in poverty.

Tell a waitress you aren't going to tip her because you wouldn't want to insult or demean her and see how well that goes over.
