Twitter files: FBI sought to ban Billy Baldwin and satire accounts

A new trove of internal communications from Twitter suggests that the FBI maintained persistent contact with company employees, and sought to ban the actor Billy Baldwin.

  • Journalist Matt Taibbi posted a new trove of Twitter documents on Friday
  • They show emails from FBI officials requesting bans on Twitter users
  • In one email last month, the FBI asked Twitter to suspend actor Billy Baldwin
  • Also listed in the ban request were satire accounts and right-wing commentary
  • FBI claimed the accounts were 'disseminating false information' about elections
'Between January 2020 and November 2022, there were over 150 emails between the FBI and former Twitter Trust and Safety chief Yoel Roth,' claimed Taibbi.

'But a surprisingly high number are requests by the FBI for Twitter to take action on election misinformation, even involving joke tweets from low-follower accounts,' he added.

twitter is a social institution and we shouldnt have a few people (capitalists) controlling these things.

its actually like fascism because the deep state is on the board. people were saying its likely elon didnt fire any of the former deep state (FBI for example) actors. theres talks of FBI violating the 1st amendment on twitter @Box Ox

No, they were suspended. That lasts 7 days. Why? They were posting his whereabouts online which resulted in a guy climbing on the hood of the car his small son was in. He said it was ok to criticize him all day but not ok to put his family in danger. So once again you're passing along false information.

The violations of the 1st Amendment by the FBI took place before Musk took over. Musk is the one exposing it. You're so anti rich you just assumed things about Musk that aren't so.

The reporters — from CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Intercept and other outlets — were suspended after Twitter changed its policy on sharing “live location information.” Many of the journalists had reported on the latest policy change and Musk’s mounting crackdown on accounts he disagrees with. In a statement, CNN said, “Twitter’s increasing instability and volatility should be of incredible concern for everyone who uses Twitter.”

More baloney. Every journalist suspended was retweeting an account that used public info to show Musk's current location. What you're not getting is before Musk came along liberal journalists were allowed to attack the right all they wanted while conservatives were not only suspended but expelled from Twitter routinely. These suspended journalists thought they could continue past habits. But Musk has already rescinded the suspensions. How many conservatives expelled before Musk bought the company were allowed back on before Musk allowed them to return?
