Getting screwed by the manager and his son....sorry its long but necessary

I just need some advice on this situation. Ive been a trailer maggot on local sort for about a year and am the lowest guy on our shift. The guy with the most seniority is 20 years old and will be 21 on sept. 20th. His dad is our manager for the whole center. were not a big center four guys on local sort and we do between 100-300 percent depending on the season.
The problem is anytime this kid doesnt want to do some job or another he tells his dad and hes reasigned. he recently took over the scan and throw position into the trailer which included parking trucks at the end of the night. He told his dad he didnt want to have to park so his dad shoved it on me and said its now a seniority issue.
This is where it gets good Ive been asking our manager (his dad) to be added to the list of air drivers for four months now and he allways said that they had their maximum amount allowed. Since then we have lost three people with air driver cards so I kept bugging him about getting me on. He kept blowing me off and then finally posted the air sign up sheet a few weeks ago. After 2 weeks of it up there were only 2 signups on it, me and his son. His son is not 21 so is not eligible untill the 20th so Im the only one ready to go. I asked him about when he would grant the air driver status and he said that he needs approval from HR and he doesnt know when it will come.

I have this feeling that for some reason the air driver slot will not be available untill his son is 21. Ive been hammering him on it at least twice a week and no go. My question is does this sound screwed to you guys and is there anything else I can do? I also heard there was some rule that a center manager's child could not promote out of the same center but Im not sure of that. Anyway your input would be helpfull and thanks for reading this long freaking post.

Yes that is kinda messed up, but thats what happens when your daddy is the boss, seen it one of my old jobs. But about the air driver thing, I don't know if there is a set time table as to when you must have the position filled after the bid sheet is pulled, however, the promotion thing you are partially right on. The son, as long as the father works at that center, may no be promoted into a management roll because his father is a manager. It would apply to if his father was a driver aswell. Sorry if this isnt of much of help, i scanned the contract and did not find a set time table for the filling of positions when they become open.

Thanks for the reply, it just stinks because I work twice as hard as all the other numb skulls on our crew and and seem to get shafted every time. I was wondering if I should put a complaint in to the IBT and see what happens. The only thing is I dont want to make a bunch of trouble for my self in the future. Im going to keep requesting my air card and see what happens.

As for filing a grievance like u suggested slightly, i do not believe you have much ground for filing one since like i said, i cannot find a set time table for filling bidded jobs, and if it says "done in a timly fashion" that obviously is open to interpretation so.....

I see your point. Its funny though because after I kept asking our manager about my air card he finally said, ok lets go take a drive test to at least get you certified to drive. After we took the drive test he said Im now certified to park trucks therefore his sone did not have to do it any more and now its my assigned task after my trailer load. So I get the ass end of it and have to stay an hour and a half later and his kid will get seniority over me for air driving. Sweet huh. I think that was my worst mistake, trying to become more usefull to the company. Pretty sad huh.

I would think there would be a conflict of interest in having the guy's son working on his shift. Then again...I've heard the rural centers are almost family get-togethers lol. -Rocky

It is totally a conflict of interest. And contrary to popular belief we are not all related :w00t:

I didn't think you all were, Voodoo. I tried to transfer to a rural Illinois center a number of years ago. I chatted at length with an HR rep that had befriended an HR rep in South Illinois--lot of suburban college kids trying to transfer to schools down south--and he told me that. Later, I heard the same from people in town. I sometimes wonder "what might have been?" had I not quit UPS at the time. UPS gave me a choice between my schooling and my career. I basically told the HR specialist to go jump in a lake. I gave my two weeks and jumped ship. -Rocky

I think a call to the Corporate Ethics hotline is in order. This behavior is blatantly unethical. There is NO WAY he should be working for daddy.

From the UPS Policy Book:

WE TREAT OUR PEOPLE FAIRLY AND WITHOUT FAVORITISM

We believe that impartiality is the foundation of a loyal, cooperative work group.

We want to treat our people as individuals, without causing the perception of special treatment.

We have the responsibility to avoid any relationship that may result in actual or perceived favoritism.

In our center postings for new jobs are date stamped and come down after 1 week. Call the 1-800 UPS ethics hotline and be prepared for some smilet to start flowing down. Totally unethical. Human resources might be a resource too.

I thought nepotism was totally against the rules at UPS. What you have described is nepotism gone wild. Kind of like the "girls gone wild", but not nearly as exciting.

One's gotta go....The boss or the kid. I didn't think a supervisor and a relitive could work in the same building period.

Wrong. Its the same shift/sort. I have a relative that tried to go to work for us at Chicago and was told he couldn't work the same shift because a relative is a p/t supe. He came out here and we tried to get him on my shift but HR balked. An operations supe told me HR was being "difficult" and he'd talk to them if I wanted. So far, we haven't messed with it. Not sure what the policy would be as far as one relative being a driver supe/manager and the other a driver. -Rocky

and a bid is to be filled within 30 days from the time it is taken down.

wow thanks for all the support. I asked our shop stew about the sign up sheet and he said they go to the sheet whan the job is ready to be filled. That means that he would have as much time as he wants before he calls and requests the new air position. Where did you find that 30 day rule?

Wow, that's weird. A driver here at our centre was trying to get his brother on as a night sorter and our sup told him that UPS does NOT hire family members.
