From my research, the very best (and highly recommended) towing pickup trucks are with a diesel engine.

Ford, Dodge and GMC: Diesel Pickup Truck Tow Test (with Video)

If there's a massive load that needs to be moved in this country, few vehicles can handle the job better than a heavy-duty diesel pickup. These trucks are built specifically—and unapologetically—for work !
And, unlike every other segment in today's automotive landscape, heavy-duty pickups are the sole domain of American automakers. The capability curve for heavy pickups has steepened in recent years, fueled largely by a booming fifth-wheel RV trailer market. These 8-ton McMansions on wheels require near commercial-strength towing power. To meet the demand, the latest pickups are engineered with thicker frames, stouter suspensions and enough turbocharged torque to move extreme loads up the steepest grades—without breaking a sweat. But don't confuse today's plush pickups with those beasts of burden from the past; capability and comfort have improved in equal measure. These rigs can tackle the dirtiest jobs while providing (in some cases) downright luxurious surroundings for up to six passengers.

Diesels are the best at towing, but not everyone wants to pay the $8k premium for that diesel option, not mention higher maintenance costs. You should have also picked a newer test to compare trucks with as ford no longer makes the 6.4 liter diesel used in that test(comparison was done in Dec. 2007). They have their own 6.7 liter diesel designed by Ford. 400 hp and 800 lb. ft. of torque is nothing to sneeze at.

This is certainly interesting...

WASHINGTON – By selling a block of its shares in General Motors Co. for $33 each — a price far below the "break-even" point — the government sharply reduced the chances of taxpayers fully recovering their $50 billion investment in the auto giant, a new report from a congressional watchdog says....

So GM fails and tax payers bail them out., they come back and do a IPO at 34bucks a share and the stock is currently at....yup...34bucks. They still have not paid us back but they posted their first profit since 2004...but wont have to pay any taxes on the profit due to a 14billion dollar tax break. It sure is great that our Govt rewards failure:

GM to get $14 billion domestic tax break

Let's see the gov't owns GM, Gm makes the Volt because the gov't orders it, it costs almost twice the Prius, the major buyer of the Volt is the gov't. And they say profits are up. So every worker gets a bonus. Sounds like the same mis-mgt actions that lead to the failure of the old GM are still in place.

And dont forget that if you buy a Volt the govt will give you a 7500.00 tax credit!!!! What a friggin joke!!!

And the latest:

Treasury aims to sell GM shares early

According to The Detroit News, the United States Treasury Department is planning on quickly eliminating its shares of General Motors stock rather than trying to maximize the government's return on its investment. The news comes from Austan Goolsbee, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, who said that the government is interested in quickly shedding its 33 percent stake in the automaker due to the fact that it never wanted to be a shareholder in the automaker to begin with. The Detroit News reports that if the Treasury Department decided to sell its stake in GM at its current trading price, the government would lose something on the order of $10 billion.

That's out of the $49.5 billion bailout that GM received from the government.

GM shares are currently trading at their lowest levels since the company went public, thanks largely to an overall market dip. The drop came even with GM reporting its first profit since 2004.

The Detroit News reports that so far, the federal government has reclaimed $23.1 billion of its investment in GM, and that in order to recuperate the $26.4 billion, GM stock would need to trade at $53 per share. The company is trading at $33.02 at the time of this writing.

Hmmmm...maybe our govt knows GM sucks and wants to bailout now to cut its losses...

I bought a used Dodge 2500 with the Cummins, and it will pull almost anything without complaint. I used to have an F250 with the Powerstroke, and the Dodge is the better truck IMO.

GM sells just 281 Chevy Volts in February, Nissan only moves 67 Leafs

Peruse Chevrolet's February sales release, and you'll notice one number that's blatantly missing: the number of Chevy Volts sold. The number – a very modest 281 – is available in the company's detailed data (PDF), but it certainly isn't something that GM wants to highlight, apparently. Keeping the number quiet is a bit understandable, since it's lower than the 321 that Chevy sold in January.

Nissan doesn't have anything to brag about here, either (and it didn't avoiding any mention of the Leaf sales in its press release). Why? Well, back in January, the company sold 87 Leafs. In February? Just 67. Where does that leave us? Well, here's the big scorecard for all sales of these vehicles thus far:

  • Volt: 928
  • Leaf: 173

And just think...either car costs tax payers 7500.00 bucks a pop. If the cars are so great then why does our govt need to dangle a carrot to get us to buy it?

Recently, President Obama selected General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt to chair his Economic Advisory Board. GE is awash in windmills waiting to be subsidized so they can provide unreliable, expensive power.
Consequently, and soon after his appointment, Immelt announced that GE will buy 50,000 Volts in the next two years, or half the total produced. Assuming the corporation qualifies for the same tax credit, we (you and me) just shelled out $375,000,000 to a company to buy cars that no one else wants so that GM will not tank and produce even more cars that no one wants. And this guy is the chair of Obama's Economic Advisory Board?
The heavily taxpayer-subsidized Government Motors Volt isn't just an extravagantly expensive lemon, but a fraud. Actually the Volt is a hybrid, and in many situations will burn through more gasoline than a roomier and much cheaper Honda Accord.
Volt sales are anemic: 326 in December, 321 in January, and 281 in February. GM announced a production run of 100,000 in the first two years.

The Volt gets about 25 miles to a charge according to a recent Consumer's Guide report. This was due to a cold Winter it was tested in, it has a bad heating system too. Even in milder climates the mileage is worse than advertised. Its an expensive car and a hybrid too. On another note, the first GM plant scheduled to be shut down where my brother works is in Shreveport, LA because of the Japan disaster. Japan manufactures a certain computer chip that nobody else makes, so the plants with less product demand will suffer first.

Barack Obama: Losing $84 billion big success

Barack Obama has some 'splaining to do about taxpayers' profitable "investment" in General Motors. It turns out the president is imagining things.
Though Democrats tout the auto bailout as a success, recent reports illustrate the taxpayer cost of the GM auto bailout was substantially larger than the Obama administration and a Congressional Oversight report has owned up to.
"American taxpayers are now positioned to recover more than my administration invested in GM,” President Obama said, according to a piece in USA Today last November. Steven Rattner, former head of the Treasury's auto task force agreed, telling CNN in November: “Recent progress at GM gives reason for optimism that it may be possible for taxpayers to get every penny back.”
In fact, Investor's Business Daily reported that even the White House’s Director of the National Economic Council remarked that the Treasury Department Department had a good chance in "recovering most, if not all, of its investment in" GM.
However, a March 16 Congressional Oversight report, tells a different story. It estimates taxpayers will be out of $25 billion. Additionally, the report points out that “full repayment will not be possible unless the government is able to sell its remaining shares at a far higher price.”
That's only the beginning. Both the White House and the Congressional Oversight report omit the fact that during its bankruptcy, GM got a $45 billion tax break, courtesy of the American people.
GM is driving “away from its U.S.-government-financed restructuring with a final gift in its trunk: a tax break that could be worth as much as $45 billion,” reported The Wall Street Journal last November.

Over one year after the promises President Obama and his administration made about the auto bailout, a February piece on AutoBlog also confirms that GM will also get a $14 billion dollar domestic tax break:
GM will be able to skip its tax tab due to years of massive losses. Companies are typically forgiven a portion of future taxes due to their past losses, but that benefit is typically stripped after an organization goes through bankruptcy.
However, the Obama administration and its allies presently continue to celebrate the success of the auto bailout, regardless of the facts. "I don’t think there’s any doubt that this was a success," said (H/T Detroit News) acting assistant secretary at the Treasury Department Tim Massad, who oversees the TARP program at Treasury, to a House panel on Wednesday.

In Obama's world, success mean taxpayers only lost as much as $84 billion.

(Washington) — The U.S. Secret Service said today that some federal vehicles for law enforcement and security purposes will be exempt from President Barack Obama’s directive that all federal vehicles purchased starting 2015 be advanced technology models.
Secret Service spokesman Robert Novy said the directive wouldn’t apply to vehicles used for some law enforcement or security reasons by various federal agencies.
“Certain specialized vehicles including those with law enforcement and security specifications are not subject to this directive,” Novy said.
That would include the GM-built Cadillac presidential limousine and other vehicles in the motorcade.
Obama announced the plan this week to “green” the federal fleet.
“I’m directing our departments and our agencies to make sure 100 percent of the vehicles they buy are fuel-efficient or clean energy cars and trucks by 2015.Not 50 percent, not 75 percent — 100 percent of our vehicles,”

Currently the most fuel-efficient vehicles are made in Europe. Does that mean we could see some of them here ? He certainly doesn't want every dept to only buy the Volt, which is a joke of a "green" vehicle.
