How many times have you come off a route for another one?

I have had four routes over my 34-year driving career. I bid out of the Hub and have always been an assigned driver. First route was an industrial park out of a straight truck. Delivered 400 packages and picked up 600 usually before I blew it out. Then I bid on my first residential route. One of the first things I noticed when I went to work at UPS was that the older drivers drove smaller cars. This one was a P-600 that had a Walmart as the first stop and then I covered an un-incorporated small town. My third route was probably my favorite of all time. I drove a P-500 on a country route that had about 200-250 miles a day. 60-65 stops, one of the shelves was empty. That lasted one year and the previous driver rolled me off of it. He didn't like the supervisor so he bid off of it for a year. OCS moved, so he took it back. I then bid on the route he left, I have been on it since 1996. I started out in a P-500 and was forced to take a P-700 when they came out. All subdivisions around a bunch of lakes with no pickups. I have looked at a couple of other routes but they don't seem to be any better. I'm too close to the end to change now.

I was unaware that in other places, there were either no bids, or frequent rebidding. Did 3 years preload, then I was a full time driver without a bid for 2 years, worst 2 years of my UPS career. Luckily, got a bid at 2 years. Did 2 routes over the next 27 years til retirement. Right around 13 years each. I hated the bouncing around. Don't think I would have made it if we didn't have permanent bids.

Yes, I know I'm working late.
We bid every 2 yrs here. 3 on a contract year. I'm on my 3rd bid route in 29 yrs. Currently running about 60 stops and 210 miles with 2 pickups. This route has been run by the book for 35 years, though. I've seen some routes go up by 40 stops or more in the last few years. The young guys always say " _ _ _ _ only went out with 80 stops. Why do I have 125?"
Some men, you just can't reach.

Imo find the route that best fits you and stay with it. I myself love my route, average about 210 stops a day,95 percent residential. No pickups,no apartments. Gravy train

I covered a route for 3 years. When it moved to another center, I should have followed it and I would be a happy guy. I just bid my own route in January. I had been cover for 15 years and am thinking about going back. Cover is a piece of cake when you are the #1 seniority on the cover list.
