Honest mistake guys, the sup did not know, let file this under learning experience.

I call bullcrap because:
-the supe didn't want to pay the employee for jury duty when he could sneak in an "optional day";
-the supe knew there's a 50/50 chance the employee wouldn't notice it and;
-it would be a feather in the supe's cap if he gets away with it.

Management is fraught with liars and thieves. The sooner the OP learns this the better off he'll be.
