Wut?? I've never heard of an alternator repair being that cheap?

That is the price of an alternator. Loosen a couple bolts, take off belt, unhook wiring harness, than take it off. Reverse to put it in. Maybe about a half hour job at most. Most of them that I've seen are pretty easy to get to. May need to jump battery to give it enough umph to start car again, or it may recharge during the time it is resting enough.

First the battery and brake lights came on, then other lights. Then everything dimmed and my headlights went dark. Then it started running funny and shut off.

Guy I work with told me it sounds like the alternator.

A bad alternator can also make the battery bad too. Best thing to do is to get to store, most with test the charging system for free and change battery for free.
