how many of you have center mgt/ on roads that are actually good people, but just are products of ups? Or are they just sneaky and mean, at home or at work..you know, someone who would write up their own mother, for not working "as directed"

I think most of my center mgmt team are good people and try to work with the hourlies. However if push came to shove i do think they would do anything to save their own necks.

Most of your local mgmt team are decent people who have almost no control over their work lives. They are totally at the mercy of THEIR managers. They don't have a contract or a union to protect them from an unfair or unreasonable supervisor. I have seen many drivers go into management and after 2 or 3 years regret the decision. I tend to be sympathetic and do my best to work with the ones who are tryilng to be reasonable.

Thats the thing about it, even though much of the centers daily business is dictated by folks at higher levels, there are still things that are still kept "in house" and some mgt can work with employees with these things and then theres others who really enjoy being a turd, then go home and act the same to their wife and kids, get what Im saying?

I've known both. Some were alright if you saw them out or if you weren't working for them at the time, but others were full-time "Brown bloods" and ran their own lives like UPS whether at work or at home. One supe was fine to me, but I never worked under him and all the guys that did work for him hated him. One of the drivers met his brother-in-law and he said that the supe was an idiot at home too. The one thing to remember is that if it comes down to their job or yours-you come in a poor second. Even the best supe can be a total a** and play completely by the rules some of the time. So don't trust any of them completely. You might catch them at a bad time or when their boss in on their case.

My supe was OK, a regular guy just following the rules and regs of the company. When he rode with me he was fine, pointing out the "way". I still would think he is a fellow worker.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I just don't see how you can categorize UPS management. We are not clones of one another.

We are a diverse group, as are all employees at UPS, hourly or management. Are all feeder drivers, mechanics, package car drivers, hub sorters, hub loaders, unloaders, technicians, specialists, OMS's, non union admins the same type of employee??

And what does home life have anything to do with how one presents themselves at work? That's rather personal, don't you think?

What exactly is your point? Or is this just another management is screwed up thread, because no one is effective running the company the way UPS management can?

And after spending 27 years in full time management at UPS, I speak from experience and knowledge of what it takes to make be successful and accountable for my areas of responsibility. It's a matter of pride working for UPS along with shareholder and customer value.

answering the original question, we have 2 sups. 1 fairly new center manager. All are fair. In my 23 yrs, only 3 sups were brownblooded 24/7. 1 center manager a total jackass always. He`s six feet under now.

We have 1 center manager, 1 on-car, and 1 dispatch/on-car sup. I know them all personally and work well with them and would have no problem if I saw any of them in a social environment. I know what they expect of me and they know what I expect from them. I also know that much of what they are asked to do is dictated from above and that they have little or no control over this. We can always tell when our center manager has just had his butt chewed on a conference call so we know to give him his space.

I have found during my 19 years that if you treat someone with respect and give them the best that you can that they will generally treat you with respect.

I'm beginning to find out there is actually some very good seeds in management, they just appear to be the minority (sadly). I've always had the utmost respect for all my oncar supervisors, my problems have consistently been at the center manager level and higher. I've had some downright evil building managers that for whatever reason want to see what I'm made of and try to break my will. I realize everyone in management has a job to do just like anyone else, but the managers who get some form of joy or personal gain from disciplining/firing people don't deserve to be in a position of authority.

This question is for people who have mgt folks, drivers, hub, etc..not for retired ex ups mgt. Ill be sure to post one for you at a later time on your opinion if all ups non-mgt are worthless slobs, and if so are they lazy and trying to screw everyone including their family and people in their personal lives...sound good???

if you really want to break it down in the union ranks, there are mostly people who do their job and have no problem, a few who go above and beyond and who make everyone look bad, and then a few more who are really a pain in the as$, who make everyone look great, understand.

Seems like in the mgt ranks, there are a few sups/mgt that are really great but just cant swim up the river because of such a strong current. Then there are a few who are decent, but just dont want to cause any waves, but over 50% of mgt really dont care one bit about their employees, and would not care if they tried to fire them and ruin their livelyhood. On top of it they probably dont care about their fellow mgt member either...only out for themselves. this type of mgt person usually is the ones that get chance after chance if they friend up. Now I dont know every mgt person in the country, but open up your eyes and look at different posts on here from people and your understand where im comming from. There are more crapy mgt than there are crapy drivers, and if you take into consideration that there are more hourly than mgt this is a pretty strong statement. But I do respect you for being able to finish a career with ups...mgt or union its a long road.

I would say our center manager is a pretty good guy You work with him and he will work with you. Our on-cars are ok. 2 of them are pretty decent and the other tends to hide and cower at any sign of trouble. you deserve a medal if you can find the guy at all during peak. It's like playing Where's Waldo? in a candy cane factory.

Why don't you ask if they've stopped beating their wives yet?

You gave two choices as if those are the only two options.

Coldworld,
I only recently retired in 2006 - not that long ago. I have always had respect of hourly employees at UPS, because I know what it takes to come to work everyday and do the job.

And I've worked in more regions and districts than any hourly employee and know the work ethic of UPS employees, both hourly and management.

So please do not put words in my mouth. Thank You

ups non-mgt are worthless slobs, and if so are they lazy and trying to screw everyone including their family and people in their personal lives...sound good???

Its disturbing to me that there are folks in this company that have no respect for anyone including themselves. The company seems to breed this kind of person from time to time and at the end we all are products of ups. Im just not sure why in 2008 employee relation has to be where its at. Every job out there have mgt and hourly workers, yes there are issues with each group, yes they have issues with each other, but ups is in a whole different world. I welcome you to go to different websites that are job sites like monster or career builder. They have sections on there where you can look up a company and former/current employees post their experiences with their employer. Try looking up ups and see what you uncover. I did this one time and was shocked. I dont remember what site I was on but almost everybody that posted for ups had nothing but terrible things to say about the company. Furthermore, very few post were from the union side of ups, almost all were from mgt and tech support, etc. Im not sure about you but this is embarrassing to say the least. It doesnt have to be this way, but they just continue to do down the same path.

Maybe the worst of both worlds are ruining this company, who the hell is going to step up and start doing something about it. Some of the drivers cant be fired, some of the mgt just get promoted to higher levels?? how is this right, and why isnt more done to take notice of these types of folks.I dont believe its all a union/mgt power thing either. Have you ever heard the term "hero to zero"

We have had good and bad CMs and DMs. There were a couple that I worked very hard for, I knew that it would be returned to me. The current team are 'takers', does not matter how hard I work, they want more. Favors, what's that??? I think they are good people, but they have not been taught how to be good managers.

I had a couple of good supes in my first stint. I had friend/t supes in that operation that were incredible--honest, etc. Those were the ones I'd bend over backwards to help. The nasty, dishonest, mean-spirited supes got a, "What? MY help? HAHA! G'night!" Chan and Tie, I really hate to say it but the reaction when I declined the offer of overtime was very, very funny. Screaming, yelling and cursing was enough to make my night and sometimes, my week!! I only declined when I had a good reason to, though. :happy-very: -Rocky
