The food source may have something to do with this.
Years ago, like around the end of WW II, the food source wasn't adulterated with GMO's, preservatives, antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides and some other stuff I can't remember.
Today it is and our government either looks the other way or is motivated to accept/approve it.

Yes and no. People have no say over what pesticides and GMOs are put in/on their foods at the ORIGINAL source, farms. Or what is put in foods at grocery stores, such as the gas put on meats to preserve the color in prepackaged containers.

We mostly buy organic, but I realize that's not always an option for people. Part of the problem is that any time government does step in to try and regulate there's always a lot of pushback against the "socialist nanny-state" etc. Just trying to ban soda and junk food being served with school lunches ends up in a big culture war.

The acceptable standard of living has gone up tremendously.
Revert to all these former Standard of Living standards below and there will be money left over in a one-worker family of four.
Families has one car.

There was one TV in the house with 3 channels ... increasing family time.
The family ate at the family table with no TV, phones or other distractions.
The family lived in a 1200 sq ft house with 3 or 4 bedrooms.

theres probably some interesting ones for college tuition, medical costs, and housing costs. the housing costs is because the economy has been financialized. the US govt doesnt work anymore, probably hasnt worked since at least Bill clinton. not sure about canadian govt, but we have undergone neoliberalism for sure. the prison population has exploded. america doesnt spend on infrastructure anymore, this is likely true to a lesser extent here as well because of neoliberalism which has infected probably all western countries to some degree.
even if ppl cut back on expenses that doesnt stop the banks from creating unaffordable housing and debt bubbles by letting ppl borrow against 50% of their income for housing.
this is household debt to income. canada at all time high.
this is probably one of the biggest problems which is people cant get good paying manufacturing jobs anymore with low education.
im not sure whats going on with personal consumption, but that doesnt make up for hte fact that under neoliberalism govt has been defunding college, and im assuming that also means theyve allowed the banks to lend ppl more money for mortgages.
income flat in canada adjusted for inflation since 1989. so more and more of your income is going to housing. most of those things you listed are small ticket items aside from the car and hte house. i agree maybe ppl have been getting in bigger sq ft property, no idea.
