I thought the same thing when the Biden official announced a month ago that we were withdrawing, and that the Afgan troops were well trained,in control and possessed our superior weapons.

Was there any doubt that wouldn’t happen?

How could the Afghan forces be this inept at warfare?

The country has been at war since the mid-to-late seventies with the exception of ‘96 thru ‘01 (and those years weren’t great).

What a disastrous campaign.

Yeah to negotiate a real transition. Unlike exactly what happened with Daesh/ISIS in Iraq. A waste of blood and treasure. Our ppl. Money and resources. Damn shame. America doesn’t win wars, haven’t since 1945.

The Afghan government never controlled more than 65% of the country and had been losing ground over the past 4-5 years. The Taliban fought for religious beliefs while the Afghan police and military fought for money. The Afghan War was simply another religious war and civilizations have spent the past 8000 years destroying each other over the question of who's god is the true god and who loves him more.

So what American would want his kid to get drafted into the military to go fight another religious war?

When you look around at the situation in Korea, Ukraine, Iran, South China Sea, Haiti, clearly the movement was to conserve and consolidate American military assets in preparation for what might happen next in those regions.

Given what could happen in those regions , after 20 years Afghanistan just as was the case with Viet Nam it just wasn't worth fighting over any more.

Americans should take a good hard look at what plays out within Afghanistan over the near distant future. When a political group promises you things in exchange for support, they don’t always materialize.

The rights of women in Afghanistan are probably history, and anyone who helped the US should fear for their life.

The US goal was to clear house of the Taliban and their influence, give the people of Afghanistan a chance to develop a competent and corruption-free government, and then leave them to maintain and grow themselves.

The problem is that we never eradicated the cancer and because of that it came back. You can’t do a job less than 100% complete and expect the plan to still work. The ANA was never as strong or lethal as was advertised (by giving them credit for successful operations conducted by elite US military units with a handful of ANA tagging along and told to stay out of the way while competent troops worked) and they weren’t exactly pure, fratricide was a real issue when working with the ANA. The Taliban knew when we left they could take over. Biden basically gave them a timeline when he announced it so they had plenty of time to prepare.

If you know someone that went to Afghanistan, especially if they experienced some tough times while they were there, it would be a good idea to reach out to them and check in on them while the news and social media plasters how much of a “failure” their sacrifices were.

Good point. All the Taliban had to do was to run across the border into Pakistan to regroup. As the war went on the issue became less a matter of Afghanistan as it was Pakistan which is where we found Bin Laden. As long as India can keep Pakistan contained and the Taliban can keep Al Qaeda at bay the threat to the West might be minimized a little bit.
