Telematics and Peak

No, they lost their jobs because the companies that they worked for continued building vehicles that nobody wanted to buy. GM was still building gas-hog SUV's when gas hit $4 per gallon and there was a 9-month long waiting list of people who wanted to buy a Prius. Imagine how many UAW members would still be working if Ford and GM had started building hybrid vehicles 5 years ago.

That is one way to interpret what happened.
Another is that they continued to make the SUV's that were making the most profit because their cost structures required them to make the vehicles that were making them money. Toyota and others that had much lower cost structures could afford to re-tool plants and produce more fuel efficient cars, that while not making them as much money, and in some cases losing money, were likely to be in higher demand soon.
GM for one could not react to market forces fast enough, partly due to their cost structures. Like, their agreement with the UAW that when they did shut down a plant for retooling, or other reasons, they had to continue to pay the employees of the plant during the shut down. They were unable to react and reinvent themselves fast enough for a changing market. Partly due to items like having to continue to pay layoff employees, which was short sighted and stupid of GM to agree to and short sighted and stupid of the UAW to ask for.

How many UAW workers would be working if they had been making hybrids 5 years ago? Possibly even fewer, as Toyota would have cleaned their clocks in that market and they would have had to drain away what moneys they were actually making on the SUV's at the time to get into that market in the first place.

I respectfully disagree. The big problem was lack of product investment beginning in the early 1970s' till the automakers nearly went under. Rapid downsizing kept them afloat but great new cars enabled them to turn the corner. Just look at the Caddy CTS-V or the Chevy Corvette or the Ford friend-150 series trucks. U.S. automakers were complacent for many years and that allowed Honda & Toyota to run away with the market. But now their build quality is right up at the top. And green cars.....GM blew a 10 year lead when they let the EV1 die.
We need to be a little smarter about our pay than the UAW was. They basically contracted themselves right out of jobs.

No It's not green grocer!
It's kind on comical on how telematics really doesn't matter during peak. Everyday they post the reports for us to see. There are drivers with 60 to 70 recording while idling, a couple of recording while driving and multiple bulk head door open and seatbealts off, and not a peep is heard about it.

Telematics means nothing all year long. No one can be disciplined based solely on telematics, it is simply a tool to give management a place to start looking. You must be seen doing something wrong to be disciplined for it.

+1 GM had a great product with the EV1. Starting in 1999...Just how far ahead would they be if they had kept that program alive. Battery technology alone would be at least 15 years ahead of the market's present position.

Little do you know, DIAD V will be a microchip implanted in your head with a bar code reader embedded into your eyeballs and a direct serial connection to EDD tapped into your brain. When you get back to the center, they will simply stick a USB cord up your but and download the days deliveries. .

I know they can't use it to disciplined just becasue of telematics but usually at least a couple times a week are SUPs and or Manager would bring it up in or PCM's. But not a word and the number of violations are staggering.

What? Clearly you have never had the thrill ordering from a tin in the drive though.... or stopping somewhere to take an emergency piss or how bout that stop at the drugstore to get some snacks or a drink. With telematics, UPS always knows what your up to....

As far as detecting DIAD drops, while I have no proof to say positively that they can, It wouldn't surprise me that since they are already equipped with GPS that they they also had a velocity sensor as well.

UPS sees you when you're sleeping
UPS knows when you're awake
UPS knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

free at last.......
Pay no attention to that man behind the curt......I mean, office door!

You're the one who has the courage to deliver in some of the worst neighborhoods in this country.
You're the one who has the brains to know which is the best way to run your area.
You're the one who has the heart to take care of your customers.

So, while those at HQ (Oz) stand there and pull the levers......ultimately (and thank God), it is you that is performing the work.

After you have completed whatever was thrown at you that day.......return to the center, complete the checkin, stand in front of your center manager (if he's there), click your heels together and say "there's no place like home".

All have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I love how everyone blames the UWA and nobody mentions the upper management for the many millions each of them were making. The guy making $50. per hour sunk the company but the many management people making over 1 million per year or more had nothing to do with it.
That's very true Sober, but workers making in excess of 50$ an hour certainly didn't help keep GM afloat. I'm just saying................:peaceful:

OK, good point. It's their fault for paying the workers $50 an hour.
