terrible vacation picks

I made a proposal 3 contracts in a row , have a high and low season . Spring break week, weeks including June July and August , and the week after Christmas , would be high season any other weeks would be low. Drivers would get to pick 3 high weeks and use the rest as you like. Yeah didn't get any support. I think it sucks low seniority drivers get the shaft. I have 25 years and for the last 6-8years I pick 2 weeks in summer. Only to watch hogs take all the good weeks they can. Pure greed in my book.

Seniority is a wonderful thing my friend

Ever since we allowed one of our weeks to be split into single days, it seems more summer weeks are available to the younger guys.

Sure it is, but can be abused like anything else. What if seniority was applied to wages , I wonder how much new drivers would make?

How do you lose vacation time while being on comp? Is that a state law? I was out 9 months a few years back and bid all my vacations to follow my return.

I'm with TheKid. Even though at the moment I can't get any of those 8 prime summer weeks even though I get 5 weeks off per year, I still agree with the current system. Seniority rules, plain and simple.

And as far as the wages, I'm sort of torn on that being a seniority issue. While yes it seems unfair that a guy with 5 years makes as much as the guy with 30 years, but the 30 year driver gets his pick of routes, while the less senior guy is stuck with crap. It's two different swords with two different edges.

I always like to let folks know I don't own the correct answer for things like this, my opinion only. I just believe in this world where we are all supposed to be brothers and sisters, there should be a more equitable way in sharing the benefits.

That's called socialism.
Ha Ha Ha, you are kidding right. The union you belong to set up the "brothers and sisters" narrative. So what you are saying is that as brothers and sisters we owe nothing to the others in our group. I can see I have touched a nerve, by citing socialism you are saying that you earned or worked for something that was taken from you and given to someone else. I would argue that simply being present at a job for a number of years does not qualify as such. But I digress, having 5-7 weeks a year should be enough in my opinion, not being able to take all of it at prime time does not equate it to socialism.

I support your idea that a better plan that more fairly distributes vacations across the board could be implemented. Chance that our "union" members go for it? Snowball.

However, stopping at a certain level of weeks of vacation earned by years of service? Uh, no. I've worked my way up to 7 and don't plan on stopping till I get them all. Muhahahaha. Seriously though. I'll take them in an off time of the year but I'm not giving them up.

I'm amazed at all the posts I'm reading about people being decades into their carreers and still not getting to pick a lot of summertime weeks. This may just be in my local, but here the contract allows for up to 10% of the drivers allowed off during the non summertime weeks, and 17% during the summer(Memorial day to labor day). My first year in feeders(since we start over on vacation picks when we move into feeders) I couldn't get anything past May, but as volume exploded due to Amazon we brought on more drivers and now I can pick most weeks in the summer(except for premium "holiday" weeks) and had the option for the first time this year to get a week in November if I wanted. I realize that makes my situation different, but to be with the company 25 years and still not getting a lot to choose from in the summer would be a tough pill to swallow.
