Life is actually very easy if you just assume everyone from other places is stupid and evil.

I wouldn't assume that all Russians are stupid and evil. But those who've invaded Ukraine and those who've ordered them to do so have certainly made a strong case for themselves on both counts over the last two months.

During Soviet days Russians were often moved into other Soviet republics. After the collapse many went back to Russia but many also stayed where they lived because that's what they knew and where they were established. The Donbas has most of Ukraine's heavy industry and ethnic Russians have spent generations there working in it. Since Russians were no longer dominating the various former republics as they had in Soviet days there has been growing discontent. Happened in Georgia where Putin invaded and carved off two areas that were predominantly ethnic Russian. And the Donbas is predominantly ethnic Russian. By the way most citizens of the former Soviet Union were at least bilingual. Required Russian studies in school. Met a woman in Kyrgyzstan who spoke Kyrgyz, Russian, and English. Ukrainians typically speak Ukrainian and Russian and since so many move to work in other countries quite a few know Polish, German, and English.

Why don't we give the American Southwest back to Mexico? Why doesn't the U.K. give Northern Ireland back to Ireland?
