The truth about Vietnam...

It's prob my fault for derailing convo to Vietnam. Sorry guys. I do t call it a success. I was pointing out how every 30 yrs or so the US Government can make catastrophic foreign policy blunders.
Remember what Churchill said. "Americans will always do the right thing....... after they've tried everything else."

I was maybe 8 in 1974ish and saw a man in McDonalds in line without a leg on crutches. I had never seen such, and not knowing better asked him "Hey Mister... what happened to your leg?"
I never asked another person the same question ever.

I think the USA won the Cold War and quite a few other minor and major skirmishes along the way. Comrade Rod.
It wasn't necessarily Reagan and Gorbachev who ended the Cold War. The Cold War ended up in the political equivalent of bankruptcy court...... They were broke and so were we...... And everybody on the political stage at the time knew it.

The USA was not broke. We proved that by turning our attention to the Persian Gulf and Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Kicked butt and went home.

We supplied the manpower, Saudi Arabia, Japan Germany and other Allied nations supplied nearly all of the money. If I remember correctly the total cost was about 60 billion . Saudi Arabia alone kicked in somewhere around 40 billion of it.

So in other words you didn't serve. You didn't have to fight a war that was lost before you even arrived or have a choice as to whether you want to or not.

I agree with the sentiment about the draft. Here's a great quote that states how I feel about it:

“I also think there are prices too high to pay to save the United States. Conscription is one of them. Conscription is slavery, and I don't think that any people or nation has a right to save itself at the price of slavery for anyone, no matter what name it is called. We have had the draft for twenty years now; I think this is shameful. If a country can't save itself through the volunteer service of its own free people, then I say: Let the damned thing go down the drain!”

Robert A. Heinlein

But I also have to throw in one of these:

Just because he wasn't there doesn't mean he doesn't care.

If it were not for the Boomers who despite one of the worst foreign policy blunders in the nation's history stemmed communist expansion in a little place called Vietnam at a cost of 58,000 Boomer lives. If they had not exceeded today chances are you'd be speaking Russian you and you kids would be attending a state owned school living in state owned housing and working a state assigned job at a state owned factory or state owned collective farm.
you guys destroyed democracy in vietnam. they were trying to gain independence from the french.

im not sure why there arent more vietnamese terrorists after what the US did to it...

And I suppose the USA never landed a man on the moon either. I am a vet and I disagree completely.
Well I took the bait. Considering an iPhone 4 has more technology in it than the lunar module did. The US was the only country in the world with 60s tech to put a tin can on the moon? It's like to a believer the bible is sacrosanct. To a non believer, it's a great bedtime story. After the US landed on the moon, that was it, everyone else packed it in and said eff it?
As far as WW2, the eternal gift that keeps on giving. Hollywood can keep making movies about it forever.

Just like racism is negative transference by African Americans who can’t admit it’s black dysfunction and criminal violence that bedevils them. The patriarchy is negative transference by women who can’t admit it’s female cattiness, gossip, emotional manipulation, and envy of other women’s beauty that bedevils them.
Now take into account the last paragraph I just wrote and think about when The Pulse Night Club shooter tries to "spray & pray" the gay away. Or any other shooting/violent spree we have, the first thing we do is Identify race/religion/citizen status. In a serious nation and healthy society we don't have to ponder these things. Storming the beaches of Normandy & vaporizing Japs in order for the greatest generations grandkids to be gender fluid blobs of soybean oil in an Imperial power that does Israel's bidding.

Hey you dumb :poop:----we didn't do anything except serve when asked. The politicians sent the military to war and drug it on forever--just like the mid-east today. I was drafted----- to accuse me of personally destroying democracy in Vietnam shows just how fricking stupid you are. FU.

Considering we got a dictator and became 1/2 socialist i would say we lost badly.
I would say...not entirely. Neo Liberalism is as American as Apple Pie. It's really just 1 party in America. Dems focus on social issues, GOP more free market stuff. They usually agree whole heartedly on war/intervention. USA land is corporations behind a pharmaceutical empire while simultaneously being the biggest advitisers on every social media and news outlet AND being huge political donors. While still giving you an appearance of choice.
