Why would you expect the "other" side to act differently than you would act?
An enemy on your border trying to influence that country. What do you think would happen if Russia tried to form a pact similar to NATO with Mexico or Canada? Or how about Puerto Rico?
Let's see...Mexico and Canada are two of our biggest trade partners. Both benefit greatly from being next to us. If Russia treated its neighbors like we do there wouldn't be so many former Warsaw Pact countries in NATO.

P.S. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory whose residents are U.S. citizens.

Is backing Ukraine supposed to be a left wing thing now?
Not necessarily...seems to be a good amount of republicants falling for the propaganda also. Especially neocons like Hannity and Mark Levin...

Its just easy to see where this is going this is going to be the new excuse to punish political enemies by branding them as a "Russian sympathizer". Well see if they change their tune once that becomes apparent

Anyone who criticizes Biden will immediately be labeled a Russian sympathizer.

After the fall of the Soviet Union the country was bankrupt. Therefore those countries looked to the US for support. Also they were just occupied by Russia. So naturally they didn't like them.

Puerto Rico can't negotiate any treaties relating to trade with other countries. If they could I wonder if they would be better off?

What propaganda are we falling for? Did a major nuclear power just invade a much smaller, weaker country or not? Was there any indication from NATO or the EU that Ukraine was about to be admitted because that has been the reason touted for Russia to attack? Had Ukraine done anything that would require Russia to shell civilian neighborhoods? Supporting Russia in this is very much like supporting Hitler invading Poland which groups in the U.S. actually did at the time.

Puerto Rico isn't forced to be a U.S. commonwealth. The Warsaw Pact countries were forced at the end of a gun to be in it. As soon as the Soviet Union fell apart they jumped ship as well as literally every former Soviet Union "republic" except Belarus which is also run by a strongman dictator. And those countries weren't seeking economic support from the U.S. in NATO. They sought protection. They got economic support joining the E.U.

The US would let them leave if they wanted?

The Cash Room. The Department of Treasury?

Every responsible citizen, and I know there is a minority fitting the qualification, should carry a concealed firearm, have a good home defense weapon such as a shot gun and have at least one long gun that will easily shoot accurately to 100yds. Several thousand rounds of ammo for the last item. Just my 2 cents.

We Americans have become too complacent and take our freedoms for granted.

Recent history proves that we are one election away from tyranny.

They've had votes on the subject. Puerto Ricans can move to the U.S. mainland too. If they choose to live on the island they pay no income tax. Not so if they choose to become a state.

I see. I haven't felt like the matter of the invasion itself is really a political thing so I've been a little confused about where some people are coming from when they speak up in support of Russia's actions.

Would the US let them leave if they voted for it? What if China started building things and loaning them money?

Did the US backed coup in Ukraine in 2014 bother anyone?

A little something called the Minsk Agreement that Ukraine violated in the unprovoked shelling the independent republics they think are still part of Ukraine?

Is that what really happened here? The real story goes something like "Russia surrounded Ukraine on 3 sides and that's when the Ukrainians just decided to start shelling the independent republics"?

Did the US backed coup in Ukraine in 2014 bother anyone?

However the removal of Russia's guy went down in 2014 doesn't seem to bother the Ukrainians who have been uniformly fighting ferociously for their freedom from exactly that kind of rule by Russia for over a week now.
