Those areas can be directly resupplied from Russia. It's when the troops and supply lines are stretched too thin that the Russians have serious trouble. Plus they can fire missiles all day long all over Ukraine with their troops out of the way. Unless the West gives similar weapons to the Ukrainians in massive numbers the Donbas will turn into a meat grinder for them. Their priority now is holding onto Black Sea access.
