UPS Receives First Upgraded Airbus A300 That Swaps Floppy Disks for Wireless Gateways – Aviation Today

UPS received the first of 52 Airbus A300-600s operated by the international air cargo carrier scheduled to receive advanced new communications, navigation, and surveillance systems with the Honeywell Primus Epic integrated avionics flight deck upgrade.

Airbus delivered the first upgraded A300 to UPS, MSN868, on Feb. 3 at its Mobile, Alabama facility. The avionics overhaul program was first publicly announced by Airbus, Honeywell, and UPS during a May 2017 press conference.

Replacing the previous analog A300 technology will give UPS pilots large new high definition displays, a new vertical situation display, the RDR 4000 weather radar system, and a satellite-based augmentation system-capable GPS that can fly LPV and RNP AR approaches, routes and landings.

How UPS is tackling post-Brexit teething problems – ICAEW

UPS’s Walter Van Der Meiren, who spoke at an ICAEW webinar last week, explains the main issues post-Brexit and how the EU and UK governments could ease them.

UPS started preparing for Brexit as soon as the referendum result was announced back in 2016. From a customs perspective, this meant redesigning a lot of its procedures to align better with the New Computerised Transit System (NCTS), and that it was prepared for the increased documentation that would be necessary once previous trading terms came to an end.

“Given the high number of shipments we are carrying on ground, we cannot go to a customs office,” says Walter Van Der Meiren, brokerage division manager for UPS. “We have our own warehouses.”

The company applied for authorised consignee status and expanded its hub network. “It’s been four and a half years of intense internal preparations. Systems have been adjusted and we spent a lot of time communicating with and listening to our customers,” he continues.

“UPS is formulating alternate operation plans to resume services as soon as safety allows and to get our customers’ critical shipments moving as quickly as possible,” spokesperson Jim Mayer said.

Winter weather has also caused issues at other UPS sites, including the company’s regional hub in Dallas. Sort operations were also canceled there due to severe conditions throughout Texas.
