Wearable Tech: Shaping Logistics and the Smart Warehouse of the Future

The following is an article written by Rimas Kapeskas of UPS

Imagine a factory or warehouse where employees can work freely, no longer constrained by computer workstations or scanners that can act as chokepoints on a shop floor. With the aid of multiple, hands-free devices, workers would simply follow real-time updates and instructions that appear in their line of sight, allowing them to work smarter and faster.

In addition to digital eyewear, picture wearables and fixed sensors communicating with each other and enterprise systems, helping employees know exactly where they need to be and what to do next – at precisely the right time. Employees and wearables work in unison, reducing error rates and keeping everyone safer and more productive.

Welcome to the not-so-distant future of work as we’ll know it.

UPS rates will change for the holidays—but not to Uber-like ‘surge’ pricing – Fortune

Imitating the car-hailing app isn’t in the cards for big shippers, despite the challenge of holiday spikes.

Last January, following two years of struggling with booming holiday ecommerce, express shipper UPS announced that it would implement surge pricing during the holiday season. Analysts and press speculated this could mean something Uber-like, with shipping prices changing day to day or even hour to hour. In mid-August, the UPS rate guide confirmed that “holiday season changes” would impact pricing for many of its services.

But despite early speculation, those changes are unlikely to mimic Uber’s transparent and dynamic pricing. Instead, a UPS spokesperson said changes will be centered on deals with larger customers, who will “establish forecasts, promotions, and thresholds” in cooperation with UPS UPS -0.97% . Individuals doing their online holiday shopping are unlikely to notice price swings.
