It has a tint all its own. They say its caused by the water running through the tamarack swamps northeast of us that gives it a "weak tea color". If we have a dry spell it get almost crystal clear. Every year the DNR puts out a chart on how much fish is safe to eat out of the area lakes and rivers and the river fish are always safer to eat in quantity than the lake fish. The river cleans itself while the lakes (although crystal clear) are for the most part stagnate. I love living on the river although we don't physically use it like we did at first. Its fun talking to people paddling (or swimming or dancing) down to the Gulf Of Mexico.
As I remember you are close to Camp Ripley. Spent almost 20 years there at National Guard summer camp. Best 20 years of my life and also the hardest. Took many a bath in the river and also the the Crow Wing River.

The Crow Wing River is a great small river. Very clear. We sometimes (haven't done it for awhile now) boat from my house to the Crow Wing and fish walleyes. Camp Ripley is booming away as I post. Tourists always think its thunder.
