Layoffs in I.S.

Very true. It's because HR doesn't have the teeth to take any non-union people on for ineptitude. You can document the hell out of an admin (or tech), show lack of performance, etc. and they will still go solely on seniority. That's why you, ImpactedTSG got cut, while the idiot tech that I like to refer to as a caveman (communicates mainly through grunting and pointing) is still there, fubaring all the technology.
Caveman. LOL. I think I know who that one was directed to. :) The thing about it is the TSG position has been dumbed down so much. The cavemen can get by becuase most of the critical thinking skills have been transferred to a few central locations where the real IT work is done.

Way back when, TSG used to get people from technical temp agencies. It kinda went against the policy of promoting from within, but that's when they needed real technical people and there wasn't anybody to promote from within to fit the bill. Then things started changing (dumbing down TSG as its been referred to) and now they can pretty much promote anybody from operations into TSG.

What gets me though is why TSG techs were forced to get the A+ and Net+ certifications if the technical requirements for a technician have continued to go down over the years. I have heard a couple different theories which make alot of sense:

If the TSG workforce is A+ and Net+ certified then that gives UPS more bargaining power to prospective outsource companies.

As TSG is downsized, displaced technicians will be more marketable with 2 certifications. I don't know why UPS would care about that though; the first theory makes much more sense.

Anyone else have a theory?

UPS was bargaining with Dell to get a contract for TSG techs to provide warranty support for them. Think about it, UPS has techs in pretty much any area around the country that could need a hard drive or laptop keyboard replaced. UPS was going to be an outsource vendor. They had a goal to get XX% of techs A+ and Net+ certified to get the contract, but that fell through right about the time Dell jumped to FedEX. I'm not sure which one fell through first, but I'm sure they were related. That is my theory, with a little help from inside information. ;)

Yeah, the caveman doesn't have any critical thinking skills, and he doesn't need them either. He does all the heavy lifting in TSG. He likes to walk around with spare monitors hoisted on his shoulders to show off his biceps. Then he finds a suitable mate, clubs her, and drags her back to the server room by her hair.

How about how will we send out the bills for all these packages. Billing is part of IS pal if it were not for us there would be no money comming into the company, at all. We put out two releases per year mostly driven by the people in the Marketing department who are always looking for a new way to make a buck. Everything we do brings more money into the company. Things like providing bills in multiple Languages like the three versions of Chinese how would you like it if your bill came in a different language other than what you spoke which is what we do currently. We have to make the data jump through hoops to get the job done but in the end it just means more money comming into the company so what exactly is your problem.

Then you will see OUTSOURCING happen to your job much quicker than you can imagine !!!!!!!
Your job will never unionize......it is the easiest job too go to India,China and the Philipines.....

If they really want to out source IS it's not going to be easy. I work in ECTS (worldship,ups.com) and Data Security. You know when TSG's and what not forget their id's and I need to reset racf's. Worldship 9.0 is a Charlie Foxtrot! and rollout for 10.0 is right around the corner. We still haven't ironed out the craziness in 9.0, ask any TSG.

However, I do think its sucks because our side is not union and if you mention it around work the bosses FREAK OUT....I think we need to be. Job security and better wages. We have to do a lot and we get paid peanuts.:blushing:

Hey retired moroon, How do you outsource local building support to China or India?

I guess its cheaper to Ship them over to perform a disaster recovery failover on an LOE Server? Have them swim over to punch down a lan jack that some hub idiot ripped out, or maybe get a working VISA to peform wireless survey to find out which access point isnt working right eventhough its pinging. Perhaps have them parachute in to intergrate a Worldship System to a Unix Server? Maybe have them get green cards so they can replace a card in the package counter pc or DIAD Rack when it fails.

Your ignorance is boundless. They have tried Outsourcing local TSG in other countries. It failed.

Why the retired moroon asks. I am guessing several reasons. 1. Accountability 2. Response Time 3. Overbilling hours 4. Knowledge of UPS specific apps and hardware.

Even if you use a local US Company that pays their techs less, those companys still have overhead and charge between $50 and $100 an hour and will have the problems I listed above.

It appears they want to make the Local TSG Very Lean and Mean. They want Complete Control.

I also enjoy when people talk about how much we make (a lot less than drivers). Techs start out making peanuts and the company has always determined our wages. Remember we have no representation. So please dont tell me we make too much. We never had a say.

For some reason they keep giving us a raise every year, its the damnest thing, I never even asked for it.

I am sick of these ex-UPSers that constantly paint doom and gloom for the rest of us. Go back to surfing porn.

Sorry, but everything doomy and gloomy I've posted has been based on the truth of what I have seen since leaving UPS. Arguing now is pointless because it's your opinion against mine, but let's see where things are in about 5 more years.

I'd outsource you in a second. You guys way over-credit yourself. Your skills are minimal at best. For instance, what company asks its IT workforce to become A+ certified 15 years after developing the position. An A+ certification is a requirement for most IT shops. Count how many of your TSG came from the hub, center, preload, PT sup, etc. Count how many were hired off the street. UPS find reasonably bright people and make them IT. Once you are TSG, you start thinking you are expert IT.

Most local IT outsource/temp agencies have IT guys who blow away the best TSG techs. Sure, they wouldn't know the company or the technology, but it wouldn't take them very long to master it.

In the world of IT, TSG techs are just elementary or middle school students arguing they are graduate students working on their PHD.

You will get mad at the statement above, but it doesn't mean it isn't true.

I did IT before I worked at UPS, I did IT at UPS, and I have done IT since leaving. The fact is, God is my witness, that TSG is about the easiest IT I have ever seen. The hard part is putting up with being a second-class UPS citizen.

Sorry, the truth is the truth.

From what I've seen both at UPS and now outside of UPS, I cannot argue with those statements.

The group is PSE (Partnership for Service Excellence). They were told find a new job w/in 45 days or take severance. This is similar to what they did to the Training department a few years ago.

They are not calling it a layoff but "find a job or else" is another term for a layoff!

There will definitely be more. Just keep your skills current with the marketplace and if you are in iffy support type group, opt out to a more critical group.

PS I used to work in Ramey.. 2000... I heard the moral is not good in that building anymore.. I used to love working in that building..

adelaide_guy: everyone loves working in RAMSEY nowadays (me included)

just browse all the (old) positive posts from the kool-aid kids who were told by DJS not to post on Brown Cafe anymore.

it's ALL GOOD.
