It occurs to me that Trump could be running as a Democrat (perfectly plausible given his past history) and you would be among the first to assail his business practices, his marriages, his ex-campaign managers' ties to Russia, etc. etc.
No one in the media, 'liberal' or not, has to twist Trump's words, they just have to report them.
It's okay if Trump is your guy, but you look a little silly defending all his comments.
Here's an example:
I say, "Hillary is a liar".
You say, "Obviously".
I say, "Trump is a liar".
You say, "Liberal-media".

Because he was a Democrat.
Trump used to be a Democrat.
He changed, just like Reagan did.
Eventually all the intelligent Democrats do.
Once they realize that the Democrat system doesn't work.
High taxes, tons of regulations and a government knows best philosophy.
