When did you start 401k and what's your balance

I didn't really start to get aggressive with my 401(k) plan until I was late into my UPS career. I know a lot of people started on their 401(k) very early; so how much have you accumulated?

??? Isn't that kind of personal to ask what the balance is? JMHO

I can understand asking the percentage saved every week. I can also understand asking which of the savings plan chosen. I can also understand asking when a person started saving. But the balance? :dissapointed: Guess I was just raised a little differently than some. :wink2:

I will say this - when the market took its major hit in the latter part of 2008 - we lost quite a bit. Never really recovered it all before retirement. That has made a difference now. Wish that we had been able to have the financial advisor handle it then that handles it now. :happy-very:

My bad. Reading that back; it just sounds wrong. I was just really trying to see where I was compared to a number value. All the time that I have spent reading through the forum I swore that I was not going to be the guy that asked the stupid question and woop there it was. Sorry about that.

Started my 401k in 1990. Took advantage of the educational loan process 8 times (2 loans active at the same time over the course of 4 years) to pay my share of my daughter's tuition. As was mentioned above, took a big hit in 2008. Currently withholding 25% of pre-tax with a balance of $80K. 6 years left and I expect to retire with a balance of at least $200K.

Looking back, I should have invested more when I was younger, but it is amazing how having a family and raising kids gets in the way.

Now if some one was to post the national average amount , I would be willing give you my amount as a %.
( hint ) currently it's beyond where Upstate plans to be in 6 yrs.

How much have people put aside?
The average balance in all 50 million 401(k) accounts is just over $60,000, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Even people within 10 years of retirement have saved an average of only $78,000, and more than a third of them have less than $25,000. More than half of U.S. workers have no retirement plan at all. With Social Security averaging $14,780 a year for individuals and $22,000 for couples, many Americans will exhaust their savings in just a few years. Since millions of boomers are likely to live into their 70s and 80s, the country is headed toward a major crisis. "It looks like most middle-class Americans will become poor or near-poor retirees," said Teresa Ghilarducci, a retirement specialist at the New School in New York.

Started in 1990 or so. Balance as of 12/31/12 $247,423. Currently contributing 8%. Turned 52 recently and still 100% aggressive. Wife has a nice balance also. If all goes as planned I'll have a condo in Hawaii next to Bottomups.

Unable to get today's amount from the pru site .
So I'll have to start from the last time I checked it .
If $60,000 is the avg amount......then I would have 5 times that .

Started when it became available to us , except for three years when I needed to build up $$$ to get a new truck . Started out at 17% , dropped down to 0% , currently at 10% . Technically could stay on the job til my 70's , giving me 13 more years to possible double , triple or lose it all .
